Sure, but the girl Adam loved never did what someone else told her to. Never did what she was expected.

Adam held his tongue. He still didn’t know why she was with Blake, and there was clearly a story behind it, but one he sensed she wasn’t ready to share yet.

She removed a pair of lacy black lingerie from her drawer and dropped it on top of the pile inside her suitcase, quickly moving on to other tasks.

But once he’d seen it drop there, Adam couldn’t keep his eyes off it. God, what was it about her that made him turn into a mindless zombie?

He stared at the piece of fabric, practically drooling at the mouth. His head chanting in rhythm.Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes.

Next thing he knew, Mercedes was laughing as she launched the underwear at his head and it went sliding down his face into his lap. “Come on, back to earth with you, please.”

“That was a mistake. These are mine now.” Smirking, he scrunched the garments into his pocket.

Her brows nearly hit the ceiling. “Sorry, what?”

“Mine. Now,” he said slowly, mocking her as if she hadn’t heard him properly. She obviously had. He gave her a dirty smile and projected all his lust into one look.

By the look of it, he almost had her for a second, her eyes glazing over with heat, and her knees twitching like she was one second away from pouncing on him. But sense took back control far too quickly, and she narrowed her eyes at him before raising her chin.

“Oh, really? Well, you picked the wrong pair.” She pulled red silk underwear from her drawer. “Red was always your favorite color, right?” She smirked as she threw them across the room at him.

He caught them in his right hand and nodded. She may not have jumped on him, but if she wanted to play, he could play. “Oh yeah, red is good.” Discarding the underwear on the bed, he folded his arms. “I always liked you in navy, though.”

She averted her eyes and raised her brows like she knew something that he didn’t, gently stroking her forehead to hide her smirking face.

“What is it?”

“I might be wearing navy now.”

His eyes brightened. “Let me see.”

She shook her head and bit her lip.

Oh, it was on.

He picked up his pace to try and grab her. She ran around the room avoiding his capture, using the sofa as a barrier and giggling as he fought his way to her. If he went right, she went left. They made a full lap with him on her tail, so close to reaching out and grabbing her.

Once they found themselves in their starting positions again, he rested his hands on the sofa back with a lazy sigh. Then, without warning, he dove, mounting it to reach the other side and throw her over his shoulder, both of them laughing as he did.

“What should I do with you now?” he said. He carried her from the sofa to the bed.

“Here?” He threatened to throw her down, but grabbed her tighter over his shoulder when she resisted.

Playfully, she slapped his arm to force her release. He did as she wished and set her down, letting his arms work their way up her body. Legs, behind—don’t linger too long on that one, Adam—hips, and finally, waist.

When she was planted on the floor in front of him, he didn’t let his hands drop from her waist, and she didn’t remove hers from his biceps. The proximity was screaming between them, and he could see her looking from his eyes to his lips, wetting her own like she could already taste him.

But it was her stare he was fixated on. As hungry as her mouth apparently was, her eyes were soft. Like he could almost see the feelings they had five years ago flooding into her irises. Then, he wondered, had that emotion always been there, just hidden somewhere that she wouldn’t let him see.

She ran her hands down from his biceps to the center of his chest as he leaned up to push her hair over her shoulder. He couldn’t take it anymore, he had to be closer.

“Darling!”

His head snapped toward the door.

“It’s Dorian.” Mercedes’s voice quivered as she whispered.

The moment they shared rocketed out of sight as she pushed him away, tugging him toward the window. He dove out onto the ledge, a little dazed. Her arms waved in front of her as she continued herding him out.
