CHAPTER 10

At Your Best

MEHKI

Iwatched Key’s back as she walked off after collecting her winnings and canceling our dinner plans. The way she waved at the few people she’d met during the tournament, laughing and high fiving them like she’d known them forever, made me chuckle. This woman had a personality that people couldn’t help but to gravitate to, and it made her more fuckable in my eyes. She didn’t have to code switch to fit in. Key pulled up as herself and made everyone love her.

“Took the bread and just breezed, didn’t she?” Mav said from beside me where he stood watching. Only he was watching Amil.

I glanced over at him and smirked. “I guess she did.”

“Shit, she might be slicker than you. And with Amilly being her cousin, I’m sure that shit run in they bloodline. You heard me tell shorty my government name? That’s usually classified information. It’s cause for concern, my nigga.” His voice dipped, sounding like he was genuinely worried.

I laughed at his assessment. “So, when you give her cousin a nickname?”

He folded his hands behind his back and shrugged. “The minute we won the first hand. She bad as hell. Was she at the lounge that night when you met Key?”

I nodded. “Yeah. She was there with another female at first.”

“Damn,” he let out, rubbing his goatee. “I don’t know how I missed that. Had I been paying attention, I probably would’ve pulled one of your moves and put my phone in her bag.”

“Oh, on some stalker shit?”

“On some stalker shit,” he repeated, and we cracked up laughing, giving each other a pound. “I wouldn’t have been able to pass that up.”

“Now you see how I felt, my nigga.”

“Nah, real shit. Shorty whole swag was just on some chill shit. Like she don’t require too much but deserve everything, feel me?”

“Exactly that,” I agreed, having the same thoughts about Key.

“Let me change the subject though fore you start clowning a nigga for being in love after only a few hours.” He laughed at himself. “Key held her own out here, and not just on the tables.”

I knew he was referring to her interaction with Karima and Julissa, and I had to agree. I really had no rhyme or reason for giving Karima the okay to pull up other than not wanting my women to feel left out. I wasn’t hiding them, which was why I chose to be up front with Key out the gate.

“Yeah. I like how she carried herself.”

“On some thorough shit,” he added. “Most women would’ve been on one or even tried to call you out on ya shit.”

“Ain’t nothin’ to call out though. Key knows about Rima and Ju, and they are aware of her.”

“Shiiiddd, just cause everybody is aware don’t mean everybody gon’ move accordingly. Lowkey, Karima looked like she was ready to shoot the one once she realized who Key was. Key don’t make shit no better with how smooth and effortless her comebacks are. And I could tell Amilly was wit’ whatever.”

“I peeped that too.” I turned my head in the direction of the DJ booth as I spoke, spotting Karima and Ju standing a few feet away.

Ju was laughing with Deuce’s wife, while Karima stood next to them with her face in her phone.

“Yo’ ass tensed up at their little back and forth,” Mav pointed out. “Key didn’t even blink.”

“I wasn’t tense about shit, nigga,” I fired back. “If anything, I was proud.”

“Of who? Key or Karima?”

“Aye, what we doin’? A play by play of some shit we were both there for?”

“You was proud of Key, man. I’ll say it for you if you scared to say it out loud.”

“Maaannn, fuck outta here.” I pushed him.
