What exactly was this meeting about? And why did he suddenly feel like he was about to face a firing squad?
As his father called the meeting to order, Nate straightened in his chair, pushing thoughts of Melody to the back of his mind. Whatever was coming, he needed to be ready. The future of Carlisle Publishing—and his place in it—might very well hinge on what happened in this room today.
Here goes nothing.
TWENTY-SEVEN
Melody satat her favorite corner table in Caffeinated Dreams, her fingers flying across the keyboard of her laptop. The familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries enveloped her, but she barely noticed it. She was in the zone, completely absorbed in the world of her characters.
Her protagonist, Olivia, was in the middle of a heated argument with her love interest, Jake. The words flowed effortlessly, charged with an intensity that surprised even Melody. As she typed, she realized she was channeling her own conflicted emotions about Nate into the scene.
"You can't just waltz into my life and expect me to change everything for you!" Olivia yelled at Jake.
Melody paused, her fingers hovering over the keys. Isn't that exactly what Nate had done? Waltzed into her carefully ordered world and turned everything upside down?
After her mom died, publishing the stories that had meant so much to both of them had been all Melody wanted. But now…
She shook her head, refocusing on the scene.
Jake stepped closer to Olivia, his voice low and intense. "I'm not asking you to change, Liv. I'm asking you to be brave enough to be who you really are."
Melody's breath caught in her throat. The parallels to her own situation were almost too on-the-nose. Was that what Nate was doing? Challenging her to be braver, to take risks with her writing... and her heart?
She dove back into the writing, letting the tension between Olivia and Jake build to a crescendo. Their argument evolved into a passionate exchange, full of raw honesty and vulnerability. Before she knew it, she had written three chapters in one sitting.
As she leaned back, stretching her cramped fingers, a growing part of her marveled at how much progress she had made. Her encounter with Nate, as complicated and potentially disastrous as it might be, had unlocked something in her writing. The emotional depth, the tension, the chemistry between her characters—it was all so much more vibrant and authentic now.
"Well, well," a voice interrupted her reverie. "If it isn't my favorite literary recluse, actually out in public."
Melody looked up to see Cassie, the café owner, standing by her table with a knowing smirk. "Very funny. You know I practically live here when I'm on a deadline."
Cassie set down a fresh latte in front of her—Melody's usual order, no need to ask. "Honey, at this point, I should start charging you rent. But seriously, you've been here for hours. Everything okay?"
Melody nodded, gesturing to her laptop. "More than okay, actually. I've just had a major breakthrough with my manuscript."
"Really? Does this breakthrough have anything to do with that handsome suit I saw you with the other day? Tall, dark hair, looks like he stepped out of a GQ cover?"
Melody fought the urge to squirm. “I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Mhmm," Cassie hummed, unconvinced. "Well, whatever—or whoever—is inspiring you, keep it up. I haven't seen you this fired up about your writing in ages."
As Cassie sauntered away, Melody turned back to her laptop, mulling over her words. Cassie was right—she hadn't felt this passionate about her work in a long time. And as much as she hated to admit it, Nate was a big part of that.
Just as she was about to dive back into writing, her phone buzzed. It was Carmen. She answered, expecting their usual check-in about deadlines and contract details.
"Melody, darling!" Carmen's voice came through, practically vibrating with excitement. "I hope you're sitting down, because I have news that's going to knock your socks off."
Melody laughed, leaning back in her chair. "I'm sitting, Carmen. What's got you so worked up?"
"How does a seven-figure movie deal sound?"
Melody's swallowed latte almost made a reappearance. "I'm sorry, what?"
Carmen's laugh tinkled through the phone. "You heard me right, honey. Paramount Pictures is interested in adapting your book for the big screen. They're talking big budget, A-list cast, the works."
Melody's mind reeled. A movie deal? For her book? It was every author's dream, but... "Carmen, that's incredible, but how? The book isn't even finished yet."
"Word gets around, sweetie. Your partial manuscript has been generating quite the buzz. Apparently, someone at Paramount got their hands on it and fell in love."
