For some damn reason, I actuallylikedhaving Sierra in my space.

I actually missed her on the weekends.

I’d gotten used to seeing her smiling face every day.

Her upbeat chatter filled my empty house with life.

I couldn’t even begin to explain why I had the driving need to make sure that Sierra never suffered again, but it was there, and it was so strong that I couldn’t ignore it.

I didn’twantto ignore it.

I’d found the one woman on the planet who could put up with my quirks and who understood my peculiarities.

Why would Inotwant that woman to live with me?

“This food is incredible,” Sierra said as she paused to take a sip of her water. “I shouldn’t be able to finish the whole thing, but my plate is going to end up empty.”

Fuck!I wanted her to clean her plate. I wanted her to eat until she didn’t feel hungry anymore.

“I think you need to try the huckleberry pie for dessert,” I told her. “Charlie will probably run out of huckleberries soon, and we won’t see it for a while.”

Her face lit up. “I haven’t gotten the chance to try it yet. I’ve heard it’s phenomenal.”

I grinned at her. “The perfect combination of sweet and tart. If you like sweets, you’ll love it.”

She snorted. “I like them way too much. I think I just love food in general. Trying new dishes used to be one of my favorite things to do.”

“Used to be?” I questioned.

“Before life got the best of me,” she said wistfully before she started to eat again.

I wanted to hear Sierra’s story.

I wanted to know what had caused her PTSD.

I wanted to know what had brought her down when it seemed like it was almost impossible for her to be negative.

Something horrible had happened to Sierra Ellis, and as much as I wanted to know everything about her, I was likely to lose my shit when I found out the truth.

However, I understood that I hadn’t earned her trust yet.

Hell, I wasn’t about to share certain things with her right now, so I couldn’t really expect her to blurt out some of the secrets she was keeping.

“Do you really want to stay for dessert?” she asked as she searched my face.

She’d been tracking my reactions from the moment we’d walked into Charlie’s.

I recognized every worried look she’d given me since we’d arrived here earlier.

“I’m fine,” I assured her.

And surprisingly, I was mostly at ease.

I wasn’t sure if it was the good food, the lack of people in the restaurant, or just the fact that Sierra was a major distraction for me.

She shot me a hesitant look. “Are you really?”

“I’d tell you if I wasn’t,” I assured her. “It’s not really busy, and I like spending time with you.”
