Jupiter bursts into laughter.“I suppose so.Taking out the garbage, as I see it.”

Kit mulls over what she said.

“I haven’t been caught yet.Let me take care of it.Hallie and I have done this before.”

I lower my eyes, ashamed. It’s not something to be proud of.

“Hallie, what do you want?”Kit asks, watching me closely.

I bite my lip, feeling invisible hands siphon off my air supply.“I just want this to end.Maybe Jupiter’s wayisthe best way.You even said there’s no guarantee the girls will confess. And now, the chances are even slimmer. If they don’t, then what case do we have?Jack goes free, and all this would have been for nothing.”

Jupiter smugly purses her lips because, as insane as her plan is, it’s actually the only one we now have.

Kit runs a hand through his snarled hair.“Let’s go home. You’re welcome to come, Jupiter.Actually, I think we should stick together.Until we figure this out.”

I know this is Kit’s way of keeping an eye on Jupiter. Now that she’s made herself known, I doubt Kit will let her out of his sight for fear she’ll do something that’ll get us all into trouble.

Regardless of this impasse we’ve reached, I still don’t trust her.

Jupiter nods with an impish grin.“One big happy family.”

Kit remains unmoved.

This is going to be fun…

FIVE DAYS LATER

“Can I just kill him already?”

Regardless of whether we’re at Rebecca Bloom’s funeral, Jupiter doesn’t bother muting her voice as she stares at Jack with nothing but disgust.

Kit, Dandy, Jupiter, and I stand in the back of the full church.I’m certain the whole township is attending. Some are mourning, but most are here out of morbid curiosity.

The town’s it-girl is now dead.

Police are everywhere, watching for any signs that might hint at who the killer is, which is why I nudge Jupiter with my shoulder to keep her quiet.

Dandy and Kit have been distant all week.I’m guessing that’s because Jupiter can be a lot.But a part of me likes having her close by.We were best friends for a long time, and everything she said to Kit at the motel was true.

But I know she grows restless, and sooner or later she will take matters into her own hands, whether we like it or not.

Jack hasn’t cried. He seems relieved now that his collateral is gone.

I suspect he’s got in contact with the girls he assaulted and struck a deal with them.Money talks, and to some, they’d rather be paid than face the judgment of this town.

Seeing him incites my anger.

But I rein it in.

No expense has been spared. The largest bouquet of pink roses sits atop Rebecca’s casket. The color reminds me of the day she ridiculed me in front of the entire school. She deserves to be here.

And next is her brother.

As each day passes, killing Jack seems like the logical thing to do.No one is really talking about it, but it’s all on our minds.

Jupiter and Kit haven’t killed one another—yet.Dandy speaks to her, hoping she’ll shed some light on who she really is.

But she doesn’t budge. She doesn’t like him, and he doesn’t like her.It feels as though they’re both jealous of each other’s friendships with me.
