CHAPTER 1

DECLAN

“My grandfather checksthe website of a tiny town in Louisiana that he only heard of a few months ago and has never been to?”

Iris looks up as I lean against the door jamb of her office door. “Yes. Every day.”

“Why?”

She grins and sits back in her chair. “To keep up with the news and gossip from there.”

I roll my eyes.

“He loves that stuff.”

I sigh.

“The news and gossip now includes you and Astrid,” Iris adds. She looks very amused by that.

“I’ve figured that out.”

Iris’s primary position is as my bodyguard, but thank God, my life and health aren’t threatened often enough for that to be a full-time gig. She quickly took over as my executive assistant, then proved to be too smart and efficient to only do things like arrange travel, organize meetings, and manage the rest of my staff, so I promoted her to what is essentially the CEO of my company. Honestly, Iris could run my company without me for weeks.

She is also in charge of all of the bodyguards who take care of my siblings.

That means Iris knows everything that goes on in my life and in the lives of my family members.

It’s very convenient.

Especially because over the seven years she’s been working for me, she’s also become my most trusted confidant and my best friend.

But my discomfort and the things that frustrate me do amuse her.

I lift a hand and scrub two fingers over the center of my forehead.

“That website thinks that my wife would be better off with Miles.”

Iris laughs. “I think about half the town thinks that. They love Miles there. Plus, he’s very good-looking, charming, adores Astrid?—”

“Alright,” I cut her off. “I’ve heard all of this before.”

Iris sits smirking at me.

She’s the only person who knows that I’m madly in love with my wife.

She also thinks I’m an idiot for letting Astrid move to Louisiana and live there without me.

As if Astrid Olsen O’Grady asks my permission for a damned thing.

“I take it you read the website too?” I ask.

“Of course.”

“Well, now mygrandfatheris concerned that Miles and Astrid are in love and that she’s planning to divorce me.”

Iris frowns. “He isn’t taking the small-town gossipseriously,is he? Miles and Astrid have been best friends for years. He knows that.”

“He doesn’t like the fact that Miles is spending more time with my wife than I am. Or the news that he has now bought a house in Rebel. Or the idea that everyone there thinks they make such a great couple.”
