Not when he looks at me like I'm the most important person in the room.

The realization settles quietly inside my chest.

Terrifying.

Wonderful.

Hopeful.

I turn back toward him.

And find him already looking at me.

A slow smile spreads across his face.

Like he's caught me thinking.

Which, unfortunately, he probably has.

“What?” I ask.

“Nothing.”

“Liar.”

His grin widens.

“Maybe.”

I shake my head.

Laughing.

And as the truck carries us through the quiet Verona streets toward home, I realize something.

For the first time in a very long time, I'm excited to find out what happens next.

And by some wild miracle... I think maybe Kai is too.

Kai

The engine rumbles beneath us as we drive through town.

It’s nice.

A quiet, wealthy suburb with enough of a city hub to make it worth the forty minute commute to New York City.

Outside, Verona rolls past in the soft glow of streetlights and storefronts closing for the night.

The drive is easy.

Comfortable.

Like we've done it a hundred times before.

She thanks me, and I’m stunned—so I do what I always do.
