“I will rest now. Protect this world from the darkness as you may face many more challenges, Miss Hayley.”
“Lady Elizabeth, may I ask a question before you leave?”
Jackson reached out a hand and quickly retracted it. Serena smiled and took both her hands in his, closing her eyes a wisp of white light wrapped around her body, flowing through her hands and then into Jackson’s and around his body.
A shock came from him and as she let go, she kissed him lightly on the forehead, and then slowly faded into a white and yellow light, almost like sunlight.
“What was that about?”
“She gave me a gift and said I might need it in the future. I’m not sure what it was.”
Taking Jackson’s hand then, I linked my arm into his, leaning my head on his shoulder.
“Let’s go home.”
“Yes, and do me a favour?” He smiled.
“What’s that?”
“Never wear white again.”
Laughing out loud, I jabbed him lightly in the arm as we walked out to join Darius who was waiting in the foyer of the now empty house, and it dawned on me then, the house we would be going back to was in ruins, our recruits either lost or dead. There was no house to go back to.
“I have an idea, why don’t we clean this place up and live here? Most of the manor has been destroyed and well, this place seems pretty steady.”
“It needs to be a bit lighter and less 'I’m a gothic bitch' vibe, but it could work.”
Nodding in reply, I let go of Jackson as Darius laid Eric’s body down on a nearby chaise lounge and joined him at his side. He took his hand in mine and kissed my knuckles gently, a smile crept across his face as he looked at me with his deep blue eyes.
“Does that mean I can stay here too?”
“No, you have your own home, and besides, where am I going to go when I want to escape from all the stress?”
“Ah yes, and I’m sure my bathroom is much nicer than that one upstairs.”
Laughing a little as he drew me in for a kiss, I felt that same sense of happiness and calm rise within me but then something else, something different. Something Serena had left me, and I was yet to find out just what that something was.
