Mai counted to ten inside her head to dampen her short temper from rearing. Sie would have given him a punch in the nose for that kind of comment, whereas Mai, the person she spent years becoming, would grit her teeth.

Unfortunately, a little of her fire escaped before shecouldstop it.“You might be famous, but you’re still a dickhead.”

Mai bit her tongue hard to prevent anything else from coming out.

Like how his guitar playing was a letdown to the rest of the very talented band, and it had been obvious for years that Ford was helping him along when he was too off his face to play.

She never meant towatchor listen to Midnight Thunder, but shecouldnever help herself and studied every clip she found online.

Shehearda bark of laughter behind her. Laughter that she would recognise anywhere.

“She’s not wrong, mate.”Ford’s voice, which held a slight rasp, was so close to her.

She didn't acknowledge Ford's comment and instead addressed Donnie,“I’ll wait outside the dressing room. I’ll take the drip out just before they go on stage.”

Kneeling down, carefully avoiding the vomit, she packed the medical kit back up.

Donnie held his hand out to her when she turned to face him, ready to leave. “Thanks, Doctor—“ He left the word hanging in the air, waiting for her name.

“No problem.”She ignored the implication and reached over to shake his hand.“Give me a shout when you need me again.”

When her hand met Donnie’s, his shrewd gaze locked on hers, and for a moment, she was sure heknewwho she was.

Shit, shit, shit.

Dropping her eyes, she pulled her arm back and spun away, rushing to the door. When Donnie didn’t call out‘Sie’as she hurried away, her shoulders relaxed.

Therewere chairs in the corridor, and she flopped into one. Closing her eyes, she leaned her head back on the wall and tried to breathe slowly and deeply togetcontrol of her heartbeat, which pounded in her ears.

Chapter 6

Ford

Ford stared at the door through which the doctor rushed.Therewas something about her that made him think they’d met before. SheknewRyan’s name, so she was a fan.

Maybe she came to a meet and greet in the past?

It wasstrange, though; his heart was racing and had been ever since she flung herself into his arms to avoid the vomit that was still pooled on the floor next to the sofa. Donnie had radioed for someone to bring a mop and bucket, but until that arrived, they were all stuck smelling the foul contents of Ryan’s stomach.

Who was she?

“Hey Donnie. What was the name of that Doctor?”

“No idea. She’s been hired by the venue.”Donnie alsowatchedthe door she exited through.

“She was feisty.”Scotty laughed, slinging an arm around Ford’s shoulder.

Nodding thoughtfully, Ford glanced one more time at the door. She was sitting outside, hecouldgo and talk to her.

“Nope,”Donnie said to Ford.

“What?” Ford asked.

“I recognise that look. The pretty doctor isnotin line to be your next girlfriend.”Donnie shook his head, buttherewas something in his eyes that Ford couldn’t quite place.

Scotty and Joel hooted and hollered with cries of how he should‘bang the doctor’, and Ryan punctuated it by throwing up again, which at least was in the bin this time.

Ford ignored his friends' crass comments. If he didn’t, he was likely to do something stupid like punch them in the face. He didn’t like the way they spoke about the doctor who fit into his arms so well that he hadn’t wanted to let her go.
