He made another note.
“When you travelled to Sale, what was your intention?”
“To see Connor.”
“That is your ex-partner. Did you inform him you were coming?”
“No. He does not want to see me.”
“How did you know where he lived?”
“I found out.”
“How?”
A tiny smile. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
He regarded her without expression. “You scoped out his house beforehand.”
She lifted a shoulder again. “I had time on my hands.”
“And once there?”
Her gaze moved briefly to the camera, then back to him. “I got lucky.”
“In what sense?”
“He’d gone out.” She crossed her arms. “Fern and the little girl were home alone.”
“The little girl being Coraline Ashbourne.”
“Yes.”
“Did you enter the property?”
“Yes.”
“Were you invited in?”
Matilda’s smile widened, feline and unpleasant. “No.”
“So, you trespassed.”
“If you must use ugly words.”
Dr. Scott ignored that. “The witness statement says you threatened Ms. Ashbourne and her daughter with intent to cause serious harm.”
Matilda was silent for a moment, studying him.
Then she said, very softly, “I changed my mind.”
He did not move.
“That isn’t an answer to my question,” he said.
“It is, actually.” She uncrossed her arms and leaned in slightly. “You asked what happened. I went there angry. Very angry. I had every reason to be. Then I changed my mind.”
“After threatening them.”
