It was a win-win.
I just had to sell it to Mike now, like he could really stop me from making my decision. He sat in front of me at his desk, nervously pushing up his glasses on the bridge of his bulbous nose.
“What can I help you with, Mr. Brandfield?” he asked, nervously tapping his forefingers together as he looked at me with curiosity.
I realized we had never really sat down for a meeting like this in all his years at my company. He probably thought he was going to get the boot, based on the lump he swallowed in his throat. I put my hand up to try and ease the worry etched on his face.
“I’m not letting you go, Mike,” I said.
His shoulders seemed to release all their tension, like a balloon deflating, as he let out a small sigh. “Thank God,” he whispered under his breath.
“So, whoareyou letting go?” he asked, looking behind me toward the accounting offices. “One of the new employees that transferred with the non-profit?”
The truth was, I had barely gotten to know anyone to make that decision yet. I was still working my way through the higher-up executives, before moving down the chain. Hell, it wasn’t even two full days into my reign yet. I wasn’t that much of a monster.
“I’m actually not firing anyone,” I said coolly.
Mike raised his eyebrows in surprise. “I thought surely…”
“You thought wrong.” I shrugged. “I’m actually not needing to let go of anyone in accounting. Not for a while, at least. But I do need to move a few things around for payroll purposes.”
“Like a transfer?”
“Exactly.” I nodded. “I need just one accountant off payroll to keep the department under budget,” I lied, coming up with it on the spot. I didn’t want Juliet’s transfer to look suspicious or raise too many questions, even though I was well aware I was talking to the man who knew most about budgets for the company. He didn’t question me, though.
“AmIthe one being transferred?” he asked, looking nervous again.
The thought of Mike being my personal assistant was an amusing one, and I held back a chuckle.
“No, Mike. I’m looking for someone who can be my personal assistant. I’ve actually already chosen someone.”
“Oh?” asked Mike in surprise.
“That new hire, Juliet.”
“Are you sure she’s up for it? She hasn’t been here but a day…”
“Exactly. So, she hasn’t gotten comfortable yet.”
“When do you need her to start?”
“Today.”
“Today,” he repeated, almost as a question.
“Right now, actually. Before she gets too settled.”
“Yes, of course. I’ll send her right up,” he said with a nod.
“Thank you, Mike.” I stood, letting him know our meeting was over. He quickly got out of his seat and practically jogged to the door to open it for me. I walked past the open door to the accounting offices, where Juliet sat front and center at her desk, peering out worriedly into the hallway. I gave her a little wink, trying to put her worries at ease. I wondered if she was stressed about losing her job or the fact that she had my cock in her mouth less than twelve hours ago. I smiled at the thought as I rode up the elevator to my office to wait for her.
As I sat behind my desk, I drummed my fingers impatiently on my desk. I shook my head. I had barely left Mike’s office, and Iexpected Juliet to just magically appear. However, I did have to run this through human resources. I wrote down a reminder on a nearby neon yellow sticky note. Just as I set my pen down, my phone vibrated on my desk.
Will.
“You’re up early,” I said.
He groaned on the other line. It was a hangover if I ever heard one.
