‘Are you being serious, or just polite?’ Auguste asks again.
I tut. ‘Let’s just say that I’m always being serious and never just polite, okay?’
‘Okay. You can watch it some time.’
‘Great! It’s so cool that you made a film. Did it take you long?’
‘I shot it ten years ago.’
I laugh because I think he’s joking but his face remains straight. ‘Ten years? And it’s fifteen minutes long?’ I splutter.
Auguste’s cheeks redden. ‘I have been editing it for a long time. I wanted it to be perfect. My father would be ashamed if it was not perfect.’
I nod knowingly. Another person with a dad whose opinions live rent free in their brain. ‘And is it? Perfect?’
Auguste runs his finger over the spacebar of the laptop. ‘I don’t know. But when Henry told me about the choking it made me see that life is, uh, not to be spent waiting for things to be perfect. Death is close by.’
‘Death is close by?’ I pull a face. ‘Jeez. That’s grim.’
Auguste frowns. ‘I am not saying the expression correctly? I mean… life is short.’
‘Oh!’ I burst into laughter. ‘That makes more sense. Yeah. Don’t go around telling people that death is near!’
‘It is a creepy expression?’
‘So very creepy.’
Auguste starts laughing at my horrified expression, which makes me laugh too. While we’re chuckling away, Henry bursts into the room. He hurries over to me and grabs my hands excitedly.
‘I’ve had ten website messages already asking about your personal training services!’
My jaw drops. ‘What?’ I ask. ‘Are you kidding me?’
‘I am not kidding. And the video has only been up for a couple of hours. Shall I send you their details?’
‘Oh my goodness, yes, of course!’ I start to jump up and down on the spot, Henry’s hands still in mine. He doesn’t jump with me so I stop pretty quickly. Even if only half of these enquiries are genuine I’m going to have 5 new clients. That means I could pay Mr Hemmings even earlier than a month!
It looks like my luck is finally on the upturn!
