A petty part of me hoped Alaric could feel my lust and euphoria the same as the others. It would serve the bastard right if he had to suffer. Then my mood dipped as I realized Kai might sense my pleasure too.

I reached for him down the bond but could barely sense him. Was that a good thing? I wasn’t sure. I just hoped he was safe. Even though he’d left me so abruptly, I still cared about him.

Zane passed me my dress. Now that my arousal had faded, I was ready for bed. And possibly a snack.

The corridor had cleared by the time we exited the room, but once we reached the main area, there were so many naked, writhing bodies, I barely knew where to look.

“Fuck’s sake, I’m going to have to bleach my eyes,” Maverick grumbled as a tall male waved his dick around while rocking a Stetson and hollering “Yeehaw!”

“Don’t be grumpy, care bear. You had fun tonight.”

“You had fun, right?” I stopped dead between two groups of people doing unmentionable things to each other. “Oh my stars, did we coerce you into this?”

The thought made me sad. I knew he wasn’t as open-minded as Zane, who seemed to view sex as something akin to breathing. Which made sense given lust helped recharge his magic.

“Little mate, trust me, I had fun.” Maverick pulled me close and dropped a kiss on my lips. “The incubus can’t make me do anything I don’t want to do,” he added, scowling at Zane.

“Wanna bet?” Zane winked before dancing off toward the stairs.

I sighed. Even after lots of mutual orgasms, nothing changed. My mates still couldn’t get along nicely. Honestly, I gave up. Glynda was right. I would just have to ignore their bullshit.

We were halfway up the stairs back to the main club floor when a sharp yank on the tether in my chest, the one linking me to Kai, sent me crashing to my knees.

I cried out in agony.

“Raven? What’s wrong?” Maverick grabbed my arms and pulled me upright.

“I…I…” My chest burned. My lungs seized. The pain was so bad, so visceral, like someone had slammed their fist into my chest and was trying to squeeze my heart until it burst.

I screamed as white spots burst in my vision. Saltwater ran down my throat, choking me. I clawed at it, desperate for oxygen, but the awful drowning sensation worsened. Maverick’s panicked voice barely cut through the chaos in my head before, as suddenly as it had begun, the agonizing pain stopped.

Kai screamed, “Raven!” and then there was nothing…just an awful silence.

“Kai’s in trouble!” I gasped when I could finally speak again. The tether in my chest yanked once again before something tore deep inside me. I collapsed in tears.

“Forgive me,” Kai whispered before the connection between us severed.
