I bite back a laugh. “No, Syrus, I’m not, but I will be. I’m closing up the office for the day and heading home. I promise I’ll let the girls know. You don’t have to worry about me.”

“That’s not really how this whole thing works, Luna, and you know it.”

“I know, but I promise I’ll text or call the girls.”

“Do you need a ride home?”

I shake my head before remembering he can’t see me. “No. I’m just going to walk home like every other day. The fresh air will be good for me.”

He still hesitates.“If you’re sure.”

“I am, Syrus. Thank you.” Because I know he won’t, I end the call.

Surrounded by the silence of my office, I can feel panic clawing at me once more.

Not bothering to shut down my computer, I grab my phone and throw it into my purse. I hurry out and lock the door behind me.

Prescott has a set of keys, so he’ll be able to get back inside to get his things. I just need to get the hell out of here and to my house.

I need my nest.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Ven

“This is such bullshit,” I grumble as I close the door to our room behind me. It’s not the worst room we’ve ever had, but it’s certainly not the best.

It’s going to be a squeeze to fit all three of us in the bed, but that’s also nothing new.

“It’s only going to be for a few days, Ven.” Knight tosses his bag onto the bed before turning to face me. “Which you already know, so why don’t you tell me why you’re really so annoyed.”

I cross my arms, hating how well he can read me—how well they both can.

“Ven,” Mack’s voice rumbles as he joins Knight.

“You’re both so annoying,” I grumble, allowing my arms to fall back to my sides. “She made you cry.”

Knight’s eyebrows shoot up as he tries to bite back a grin. “I wouldn’t say she made me cry—it was more the situation that made me cry.”

“The situation she created,” I growl, stalking toward him. “I don’t like it when you cry.”

“Neither of us do,” Mack agrees. “But it’s not like she did it on purpose. She was definitely freaking out.”

Knight hums. “I didn’t notice at first. Not until you asked her if it was because of Fabian. Do you think it’s just the fear his name instills?”

“Does it matter?” I roll my eyes, ready to stop talking about the pretty little ice queen omega.

Mack shrugs. “It might. If it’s general fear, that would be easier to overcome. But if it’s personal? She might not be able to.”

I sneer. “It sounds like she just lacks a backbone.”

I wince, realizing how cruel I sound.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Don’t get me wrong. Making Knight cry is reason enough for me to be pissed off, but this feels deeper somehow.

I just don’t understand why.
