The Black man steps forward, ducking his head so I can meet his brown eyes. His skin is a deep, rich brown that’s nearly the same color of his eyes, and he’s fucking massive—probably closeto a foot and a half taller than me when I’m not wearing heels. “I’m Mackenzie Miller, also known as Mack or Mack Truck.”
“I can see why you ended up with that name,” I say dryly, releasing his hand as the final man holds his out. “That must mean you’re Haru Yamada.”
He winces, tugging at his low ponytail. “Yeah, please don’t call me that. You can call me Ven or Vengeance.”
That makes me raise my eyebrows. “Do I even want to know?”
“Absolutely not.” Knight shakes his head, drawing my attention back to him. “You’re not our lawyer yet, and I’d hate to implicate ourselves in a crime.”
I narrow my eyes, unsure if he’s joking or not. I don’t think he is.
“Okay. Before we get started, can Prescott get you anything to drink? Water? Coffee?”
Knight’s eyes close as he takes a deep breath, and I freeze. Surely, he can’t scent me.
“Do I smell cinnamon rolls?” he asks with a crooked grin. “I’m pretty sure I do, and I’d love one of those.”
“The best I can offer you is a cinnamon roll flavored latte,” Prescott says evenly. “That would be what you’re smelling.”
“Oh, that sounds amazing. If it isn’t too much trouble, I would love one.”
Prescott nods, turning his head to look at me. I look down at my almost empty cup and nod.
I didn’t mean to drink that one so fast, but what can I say?
“Ven? Mack?” Prescott pauses beside the men.
Ven shakes his head, but Mack nods. “I’d love some water.”
“I’ll be right back,” he promises before ducking back into the reception area.
I wave toward the chairs in front of my desk. “Have a seat and make yourselves comfortable. I caught up on the informationyou provided Prescott over the phone. I get the feeling there’s a lot you didn’t tell us about…Stacia, wasn’t it?”
“Yes. My sister, Stacia. We’re twins.” Knight drops into the chair in the center, the other two settling at his sides.
“She’s an omega?”
He nods. “Yes. We wouldn’t have sought you out if she wasn’t. It’s not like you’re exactly close to home.”
“And where is home?”
“Orlando,” he tells me, and my eyebrows shoot up. “Yes, it was quite the journey to get here, but you come highly recommended. They say you’re the best.”
“And she is,” Prescott chirps as he carries in the drinks. He hands Mack and Knight theirs before passing me mine and settling into his seat.
I gulp down the remainder of my second cup before lifting the new one to my lips. I really do love this flavor.
“Why don’t you tell me exactly what’s going on with your sister? I know you already told Prescott the basics, but it will be better if I hear it all from you.”
Knight grows serious, setting his cup on the edge of my desk as he leans forward. “Stacia has always been independent. The last thing she wanted was to become an omega, but as we all know, we don’t get a say in our designation. Our dad didn’t want to crush her spirit, so he let her do what she wanted even after her designation reveal. Sure, she’s gotten herself into a few binds here and there, but it’s never been too serious—at least not until now. She met someone during a trip to Miami.”
I stiffen at the mention of my hometown, but force myself to relax before anyone can notice.
“He was wooing her, but she wasn’t sure how she felt about him. She liked him, but felt as though he was hiding something. And boy, was he. He’s involved in some less than legal things, which isn’t an immediate no for my sister, considering how wewere raised, but she felt like there were too many red flags to ignore. When she told him she was ready to go home, he didn’t take it too well.”
Ven snorts. “That’s putting it lightly.”
Knight sighs. “He must’ve bought off a judge because she was declared mentally unfit to care for herself and he was named as her guardian. He took her phone, and we haven’t been able to speak to her in months. Every time I show up at his compound, he sends me home without letting me see Stacia. I have no idea how he’s treating her, or even if she’s still alive.”
