I wait for the lecture. For the scripture. For the older brother to step into the role Giovanni assigned him at birth — the heir, the moral compass, the one who was supposed to keep the rest of us from becoming what we were always going to become.

The lecture does not come.

Santino lifts his eyes from the table to my face. Studies me. The look is surgical — the same assessment he deployed on Nova the first time she walked into this estate, the same cold measurement he runs on every person who enters his perimeter. Except this is worse. Because he is not measuring a stranger. He is measuring the distance between who I was this morning and who I became the moment I said let the breach happen with the easy authority of a man who has stopped counting the cost in human.

"Is that what you want to become?"

Seven words. Delivered the way he delivers everything since the collar came off — quiet, precise, loaded with the weight of a man who spent ten years listening to other people's sins and has heard every version of the lie I am currently telling myself.

He is not asking about Keeler Street. The plan is sound. He knows it. I know it. Fabio will execute it with the mechanical competence that has kept this family breathing since before I was born.

He is asking about the ease.

About how naturally the cold slid into my voice when I said minimal personnel. About how smoothly the arithmeticassembled — lives on one side, intelligence on the other, the equation balancing itself with a precision that should have cost me something and did not.

He is asking about Giovanni's playbook — the one written in our blood, encoded in our bones, activated by the specific combination of pressure and power that turns Rivas sons into the thing their father built them to be. A machine for calculating acceptable losses. A system for converting human beings into strategic assets. A way of thinking that sits dormant until the war gets bad enough and then rises like a reflex, fully formed, fluent, comfortable in your mouth the way your native language is comfortable — the one you dream in when you are too tired to pretend you speak anything else.

I have no answer.

I could tell him the men at Keeler will be briefed. That the risk is calculated. That this is what leadership looks like in a war started by a dead man's ambition and fought by his sons because no one else is left to fight it.

All of it is true and none of it is the answer he is asking for.

Santino stands. Pushes his chair in. The wood scrapes against the floor with the same sound Giovanni's chair made ten thousand times in this room — a sound I have heard my entire life, the bass note of every decision this family has ever made, the furniture groaning under the weight of what it has witnessed.

He walks to the door. Opens it. Turns back.

His dark eyes hold mine for three seconds. Long enough for me to understand that he is not angry. He is not disappointed. He is something worse — he is recognizing what he sees. The same monster he found beneath his own collar, the same cold inheritance he spent a decade trying to suffocate with incense and scripture and the desperate fiction that a man can choose his nature.

He could not.

He is watching me discover that I cannot either.

He leaves the question in the room the way he leaves everything — with precision, with weight, with the absolute certainty that whatever detonates from it is my responsibility to survive.

The door closes.

I sit alone at Giovanni's table with the echo of a question I cannot answer and the sound of my father's ghost laughing somewhere beneath the wood.

Dante Watches Everyone

I find him in the hallway.

Leaning against the wall six feet from the war room door with his arms at his sides and his dark eyes already on me when I step through it. He was waiting. He has been waiting the entire time — through Fabio's briefing, through my Keeler Street decision, through Santino's seven-word grenade and the silence that followed it. He stood in that corner and absorbed every syllable spoken in that room and then positioned himself precisely here, in this hallway, at the exact point where I would have to pass him on my way out.

Dante does not ambush. He intercepts.

"You need something?" I ask, and the question sounds sharper than I intend because my nerves are still vibrating fromSantino's stare and the echo of my own voice making decisions that cost men their lives.

He shakes his head. One movement. Economical. Dante has never wasted a gesture in his life — every shift of weight, every blink, every breath is allocated with the precision of someone who learned early that excess draws attention and attention draws violence.

I stop walking. I look at my brother — really look, the way I have not looked at him in weeks because the war has consumed every second of my attention and Dante's silence made him easy to take for granted. He is always there. Always armed. Always positioned at the doorway or the window or the corner with the best sightlines. So consistent in his watchfulness that he became part of the architecture, another wall, another lock, another piece of the fortress I assumed was holding.

But standing here, facing him in the hallway light, I see something that makes my stomach drop.

He is not watching the door behind me. He is not scanning the corridor for threats. His dark eyes are locked onto my face with an intensity I have only seen from one other person in this family — Giovanni. The night before a decision that would change everything. The same focused, unblinking assessment of a man measuring whether the thing in front of him is stable or about to collapse.

Dante has been watching me.
