“Come on! We can’t start without you; it’s a bridesmaid rule.” She says as she marches me to the centre of the waiting women.

This is a little embarrassing. Do we actually have to jump up to catch it? The last thing I want to do is make Max any more uncomfortable. He looks enough on edge as it is. A soft melody starts to play through the speakers as Maya backs away from us all, and everybody starts to cheer.

“Three…Two…One…” Everyone shouts as she dramatically swings her flowers up and down.

But on one, she doesn’t let go.

She spins around with a mischievous smile on her face. Bringing her spare hand up, she taps a finger on her cheek and starts walking towards us. The room is silent now, other than the melody that’s still playing in the background.

It is only when she’s stood directly in front of me that I realise that she is giving the flowers to me. With shaky hands, I take them from her, frowning as she leans in to kiss my cheek before walking away. Only for Max to take her place.

His usual cheeky smile is back in place as he takes my hand and kisses the back of it, before lowering down to one knee.

What!

This cannot be happening.

I whip my head from left to right and realise all our closest friends and family are huddling around us. Every single one of them was smiling with kind eyes and excited expressions. Even my dadandLiz!

My beautiful, sweet Max is gazing up at me with so much love in his eyes. I want to kneel beside him.

“Sugarplum.” He starts, pulling a box from his inside pocket. My eyes are already starting to well up, and he hasn’t even said anything yet. “From the moment we first met on my mum’s front step, I knew there was something special about you. You soon became my best friend, the one person on this planet who understands my ridiculous humour. The one person to always be there for me when I didn’t even know I needed it. The only person to ever get the real me. Somewhere along the way, our friendship turned into something more. Something so much deeper, and I don’t want it to ever come to an end. I want a lifetime with you. Your laughter, your dancing and even your unfortunate shower singing.”

I laugh, the tears flowing freely now. My hands are shaking so much that Fallon has to come and take the flowers from me.

“So, baby. Will you let me love you, laugh with you and more importantly, dance with you through this crazy life?”

He finally opens the ring box, and inside there is a beautiful, gold diamond ring.

“Will you marry me?”

He doesn’t get to finish the sentence before I drop down to my knees in front of him.

“Yes, yes! A million times, yes.” I cry out.

With the largest smile I have ever seen him wear, he takes my left hand in his and slowly pushes the ring up my finger.

“I fucking love you, Lucy.” He says as his own eyes start to water.

“I love you too, Max.”

I grasp his face between my palms and kiss him so deeply I don’t know where I start, and he ends. The sound of applause is the only reason I pull my face away, but I don’t let go of him.

“It’s about time I had your last name, don’t you think?”
