"Fuck, Enzo," Cade mutters, bending down and picking up the smashed remnants of Lyndall's phone.
There are also tire tracks.
My stomach heaves.
I take the phone from Cade and pocket it. Then he hands me mine.
We look at each other.
I set off at a run to the diner, but there are only a handful of people in there.
I head to the waitress. "Have you seen this woman?"
"No, honey." She offers me a worn smile.
I pull up Lyndall's photo.
"Naw, not her, either." Then she frowns. "There was somenoise and shouting just down the road a bit that reached up about twenty minutes or so ago."
"Thanks."
I head out to join Cade.
"What now?" he asks.
I sigh. I'm fucking in over my head. I'm drowning. "I'm going to have to speak to my father."
"Not Gino?"
"No, not fucking Uncle Gino." Though I would prefer that. I would prefer owing him all the favors in the world. But this is family. Immediate family.
It is worse than that.
It is me fucking up.
"I need to talk to Dad. Tell him not only have I been protecting Lola, the daughter of his most hated enemy, but I also managed to lose Lyndall."
"Fuck."
"Exactly. This is not a conversation I'm looking forward to having."
But it needs to be done.
Then I will find them.
If it is the last thing I do, and it very well might be, I will find them.
Both.
