“About nine forty? If I get on.” He doesn’t sound pleased about that possibility. “I’ll let you know when to expect me.”
“Okay,” I say, nodding, my spirits lifting. “I can come pick you up.”
If I only have to wait until tonight to see him…
I sigh. “I should probably get going. I still have to run into town before our guests check in.”
Zach’s grumble comes over the line. “What are you going to do with the scumbag?”
I drop my head into my free hand. Because not only do I not know how to respond to his attitude, I also don’t have an answer. The hope I felt a moment ago is suddenly gone.
“I honestly don’t know,” I admit.
“Well, he can’t sleep in the lodge again,” Zach clips.
“No, of course not,” I concede.
“And the cabins will be booked.” His tone has gone steely again. “Greta, he cannot stay in the camper with you.”
“Well, I just don’t know—”
“Let me get checked in, and I’ll call Evan and Hunter. One of them can take him off your hands. At least until I get back.”
I bite my lips together. Pawning Josh off on someone else feels like shirking my responsibility, but I won’t fight Zach on this. I don’t want Josh staying with me in the camper either.
“Okay. Let me know what they say. But I’ll have to put him somewhere when the guests check-in.” I check my watch. “That’s in a few hours.”
Zach snorts. “Feel free to lend him my Solitaire.” The one-person pup tent is so tiny, you can barely sit up straight in it. It’s strictly for sleeping or keeping out of the elements. I roll my eyes.
“Gotcha.” But if it comes to that, Josh can use my Coleman Skydome. At least it’ll allow him to move around.
“I’ll let you know what I hear from Evan and Hunter.”
When we hang up, I can’t bring myself to walk back inside. I tap on my phone until I’m looking at Zach’s picture again.
I really hope the love in his eyes that’s so shiny and clear in this image will still be there when I see him again.
ChapterTwenty-Five
ZACH
“No way, man,”Evan spits out in disgust. “No way is he getting anywhere near my girls.”
I left my old Sigma Chi brother a voicemail while winding my way through security, and he didn’t call me back until I was already at my gate, waiting to board.
“C’mon, man. You don’t have a spare room where he could crash for a couple of nights?” I’ll beg if it’ll help. Not above begging.
“Even if I did, no way I’d let him stay. After what he did to you and Greta? You think I’m letting him near my family?”
I let out a sigh. I guess I can’t blame him. I don’t want him anywhere near mine either.
And, I don’t care how soon it is. Greta is mine. And I’d give anything to make her family.
“Fine. I get it. Hey, you heard from Hulin lately? He’s not answering my calls.”
“Played pick up with him last week.” He pauses. “He mighta said something about a business trip?”
“Shit,” I mutter.
