“Do you mean his secret clients or the ones that we approved of?” I lean back in my chair and stare at Dante.

Dante lifts his gaze and narrows his eyes. “You need to vent?”

I blow out a breath. “No. I might need a fuck, but you’re not my type.”

He rolls his eyes at my grin. “Sara needs to focus too. She’s working on the Lavender Fields file.”

One of Tom’s clients. “Yes, I’m working on my clients and Tom’s today. We need to set up the audit for his legit banking client.”

“We don’t know the new clients aren’t.” Dante leans against the doorframe. “I’ll put together the schedule, but Tom should be back by then.”

“Maybe.” I drag my hand through my hair. “Who knows with him?”

Sara appears behind Dante, wringing her hands. I straighten and stand.

“What’s wrong?”

She glances at Dante and he moves to the side so she can come into my office. He follows her in.

“Do I need to get Wyatt?” Dante gestures toward the wall.

She shakes her head. Her face is pale. “He’s busy on a call.”

Dante glances over his shoulder at the door and then closes it. “Sit, pip, before you fall over.”

She almost collapses into the chair.

“What is it?” I almost want to say, What did Tom do now?

“Mom and Roger extended their vacation another month. She emailed me and Tom.” Her wide eyes lift to mine. “Tom replied.”

This is the first time he’s made contact since he went missing.

“Show us.” Dante sets his tablet down and reaches for her phone.

She glances up at him and offers it to him without another word. Her brows furrow as she watches him read it. He hands it to me.

Have a good time. Looking forward to hearing all about it. -Tom

I set her phone on my desk and count to five. “What the actual fuck?”

Sara shakes her head.

“He’s making sure they don’t know anything. The longer they stay away, the fewer people we need to protect.” Dante clenches his fist.

“Why wouldn’t he just tell them?” Sara’s knuckles are white as she holds her hands. “If he’s in trouble, someone can help him. But we can’t if he keeps running away.”

This has always been an issue with Tom. If I did something he didn’t like, he’d freeze me out. The same with Wyatt and Dante. Like we didn’t matter anymore. But he never froze out Sara. He always stayed in touch with her.

Fuck, he’s hurting her and I can’t stand it.

“Come here, flower.” I push back and wait for her to round the desk.

Drawing her down on my lap, I sweep her hair over her shoulder, smoothing my hands over the tense muscles of her neck and shoulders.

“Tom isn’t doing this to hurt you,” I say softly. “He just has to figure this out and then he’ll come back. He’s smart and knows what he’s doing.” I hope. “You have us.”

Her muscles loosen beneath my touch and she turns. Her eyes search mine before she wraps her arms around my shoulders. I slide my hands around her and hold her close.
