“Thanks, Michael,” he says. “I’m sorry if I jumped down your throat or mistrusted you. I’m just worried about her. I know you would never hurt her.”

“Well, I’m glad we finally agree on something. See you tomorrow.”

“See ya,” he says and disconnects the phone.

I can’t blame him for his reaction. I’d be the same way if the tables were turned and it was Gina suffering, but I also need to make him understand that he can trust me. I think I am finally getting through to him. Perhaps he will feel a lot better when he sees Zaira tomorrow.

I look at my watch. 5:30 p.m. Shit, where does the time go? It’s been two hours since I brought Zaira home. I wonder if she was able to get some rest. I decide to go upstairs to check on her.

When I get to her room, the door is cracked. I peek in, and she is sound asleep on the bed. Good. She needs the rest.

I’ll talk to Dina about dinner for Zaira and then I think I will take a nap myself. It’s been a long fucking day, and I will need to have a clear head for when Zaira and I talk tonight.
