“Sounds good.” Rawls and Connor are flying in for Landon’s birthday weekend, and I’m excited for us all to be together.
“Let me get off the phone so I can get home safely. Love you.”
We hang up and I close my eyes, trying to chill out for a minute.
Five minutes of quiet later, I pop my eyes open and start to work on my reading for school, so I can check onemore thing off my list.
BETTER TOGETHER CHAT
Later that night
CONNOR: Gracie, now Mom is asking me about your law school plans?
GRACE: Ugh, I’m sorry. I haven’t called her in a couple of weeks.
CONNOR: She probably knows she won’t get anything out of Landon or Rawls.
RAWLEY: That’s for sure.
LANDON: You should just tell her law school’s not happening. Period.
RAWLEY: Because that’ll go over well.
GRACE: I have. Sort of.
LANDON: Be direct and make her hear you.
RAWLEY: Or keep ignoring her…
LANDON: Not helpful, Rawls.
RAWLEY: Because you talk to Mom so often? C’mon.
LANDON: It’s different for Grace and her.
GRACE: Boys, stop. I’ll chew on talking to her.
GRACE: I’ve got a ton to figure out anyway.
CONNOR: You mean about law school?
GRACE: No, about Mom.
CHAPTER 32
Johnson
MID-OCTOBER (THREE-ISH WEEKS LATER)
As we march into the locker room after today’s win, we’re six and one. Six and fucking one, after grabbing two wins and losing one in the last three games.
And now it’s the bye week—a whole week off.
I look around at the guys in the room, and there’s no denying that our team chemistry is incredible. Both sides of the ball, not only playing well, but clicking inside the locker room. Everyone getting along, sharing jokes, exhilarated about where we’re headed.
Which looks to be the playoffs. We even have a chance to finish at the top of our conference and get a free pass into the second round. Signing Paul Graves has helped for sure, as defenses don’t know yet how to cover him in our schemes.
Everything with Grace is going so well too. The Tuesday dates have continued, and I’ve pushed myself to think of different things to do that we can also keep quiet, so we’re not always stuck at home.
