Jack set her feet on the floor then lifted her dress over her head and unhooked her bra. He sat on the edge of her bed and she stood between his legs. Their eyes met and held. Then he bent down, taking her nipple between his lips, sucking and rolling his tongue over the firm bud. All of Lexi’s blood left her head, aiming straight at her center, which was now ablaze with desire for him. She removed his shirt, then he wriggled her panties past her hips.

Lexi climbed up on the bed, straddling his lap. He reclined back on the mattress while slipping his hand between her legs and caressing her most delicate spot. The rough denim of his jeans rubbed against the tender skin of her inner thighs, but she loved the contrast between the sensations. Like every other time he’d touched her, it felt impossibly good, but it was like he automatically knew now exactly what she liked. He paid attention. He...cared.

“We need to get you out of these jeans.” Lexi shifted from his lap and rummaged through her bedside table drawer for a condom.

Jack stood and shucked his pants, then took the foil packet from her and rolled on the condom. Lexi was about to stretch out on the bed, but he surprised her and picked her up again. Pressing her back against the wall, he wrapped one of her legs around his hip and she followed suit with the other. She had never done it in this position, but then again, she’d never been with a guy as strong as Jack. He drove inside and she pulled him closer, with her ankles crossed and her heels pressing on his backside. His kisses came hot and wet, and the pressure built impossibly fast, even more so than the other times they’d made love.

Jack was taking hard, fast thrusts, forcing her hips into the wall, and ragged breaths from her lips. She was already at the edge of her peak. Hovering. Reaching. So close. But not yet. Lexi let her mind go and focused on his kiss, the touch of his skin against hers, and how she could be totally uninhibited with him without worry. She trusted him. Implicitly.

When her body gave way, she burrowed her face in his neck, biting down on his skin while the stubble along his jaw dug into her cheek. She called out against his skin and Jack did, too, only he wasn’t quite so quiet. His body convulsed and neither said anything, arms wrapped tightly around each other, both of them struggling for breaths.

Jack gently set her down and stepped into her bathroom to dispose of the condom. When he walked back into her room, Lexi was sprawled on the bed. He happily stretched out next to her.

“That was unbelievable,” she said, rolling to her side and placing her hand on his chest.

“Really? It seemed totally believable to me. We work well together.”

Jack had an excellent point. Their chemistry was so electric that this part of their relationship was undeniably perfect. The rest of it was great, too, for that matter. “Are you thirsty? Hungry? Can I get you anything?”

“I’d love a glass of water for now.” Jack scooted back on the bed, then pulled back half of the duvet and climbed underneath it.

“I’ll be right back.” Lexi grabbed her silk robe from the closet and wrapped herself in it before padding off to the kitchen. She stood at the fridge, filling two glasses from the water dispenser. Through the kitchen window, she could see the lights on in her parents’ house. She still couldn’t really believe Jack had made peace with her dad. It was remarkable.

Glasses filled, Lexi also grabbed a package of chocolate sandwich cookies from the pantry to deliver it all to the bedroom. But the instant she walked through the door, she saw the loveliest sight. “Aww. He fell asleep.” Jack had turned onto his side, tucked one arm under the pillow and was deep in a peaceful slumber. His eyes were closed, his mouth slack. She set down the glasses of water, perched lightly on the edge of her bed and took out a cookie, nibbling on it as she watched him sleep. Jack had never slept over at her place before, and Lexi knew for a fact that her dad was aware that he was there. Heck, his truck was still in the driveway. But Jack had been working so hard, she couldn’t bear to wake him.

She went into her bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face, then turned off the lights and climbed into bed next to him. It wasn’t easy to snuggle with Jack—he was so big. But she could mold her body next to his, and that was what she did. Her only thought as she drifted off to sleep was that she was in big trouble. Not so much with her dad, but with her own heart.

Eleven

Waking up in Lexi’s bed shortly before five in the morning was the worst possible start to Jack’s week. He stumbled around in the dark, searching for his clothes in the somewhat unfamiliar landscape of Lexi’s bedroom, trying not to wake her. When he stubbed his toe on her dresser, he failed.

“Ouch!” He did his best to swallow back his outburst as he hopped around the room on one foot.

“Jack?” Lexi’s sleepy voice sounded as disoriented as he felt.

“I’m so sorry I woke you. I’m trying to get my clothes so I can get out of here. I’m going to be late. I’m supposed to meet Rich at the landing strip at six.”

Lexi switched on the small lamp on her bedside table, blinking as she got used to the sudden burst of light. “I’m sorry.”

Jack grabbed his remaining clothes to finish getting dressed. “You should have woken me last night. My car is out in the driveway...which means your dad knows I slept over. I told him I’d take things slow, and then I do this?”

Lexi laughed quietly. “I’m pretty sure he knows we’re having sex, Jack.”

“It’s not funny. He probably does, but it’s the principle of the thing. I want him to know I’m an upstanding guy. This is not what an upstanding guy does.”

“It’s no big deal. So, you fell asleep. You’re exhausted, which is no surprise. You’re working like crazy.”

Jack drew in a deep breath, trying to clear his head and calm down. He didn’t want to blow things with Lexi, and that included messing things up with her dad. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m stressed. The next three days are going to be a nightmare.”

Lexi climbed out of bed and grabbed her robe, which was draped over the back of a chair. “I know. And I’m sorry. But try to focus on the big party at Rusty’s Wednesday night. You’ll be done then.” She gently placed her hand on his arm, peering up at him.

As soon as she touched him, he felt a bit better. “You’re right. I just need to get through this final push.”

“You’ll do great.”

“Thanks. I should get going.” Jack made sure he had his keys and wallet, then walked out into Lexi’s living room with her trailing behind him. “Oh, damn. I can’t take these boxes for you right now. Can I do it this weekend?”

“Yes. Of course. Don’t worry about it.”
