I grip the spine so hard my knuckles turn white, the dragon egg pressed between my chest and the warm scales beneath me. The moment I'm secure, Diaval's enormous wings spread out, blotting out the sun itself. The shadow that falls over the village is absolute, a darkness that speaks of ancient power and inevitable death for anyone foolish enough to challenge him.
Then he leaps.
The g-forces slam into me like a wall, pressing me against his scales as he launches into the sky. My stomach drops into my feet, the ground falling away so fast I can't even scream. Wind roars in my ears, tearing at my clothes, freezing the tears that stream from my eyes. Each beat of his wings is a force of nature, displacing air with thunderous booms that shake my bones.
When he finally levels out, gliding effortlessly through the frozen sky, I take a shaky breath and try to steady the terror still clawing at my chest. The mountains loom ahead, massive and ominous, growing closer with every passing second. Every moment up here is a fight to keep the fear at bay. But I have to hold it together.
We all do.
Because somewhere below us, Feray is running toward a war that will change everything. And we need to be ready to burn anyone who tries to stop her.
There's no turning back now.
