We fall into a quiet silence after that. Comfortable. His thumb drags along the back of my hand in slow, lazy circles.
“You’re warm,” he mumbles, eyes closed now.
“You’re heavy.”
“You’re mean.”
“You love it.”
“Unfortunately,” he says, drawing out the word like a sigh.
I lean my head against his. “We don’t have to do anything tonight.”
“We already are.”
“What, being lazy?”
“Being close.”
That makes something flutter in my chest. I look down at him, at the way his lashes fan against his cheek, the curve of his mouth, relaxed and quiet. He’s soft like this, quieter than usual, like all the edges are put away for the night.
I press a kiss to the top of his head.
He doesn’t say anything, but I feel the way his fingers tighten around mine.
We stay like that for a long time.
Just... still.

RUSH
I watch Everly across the clubhouse and I can see the tension in her shoulders.
She's talking to Chloe but her smile doesn't reach her eyes. She's distracted.
The news about Diesel flying out here is weighing on her. I can see it in the way she holds herself.
And Ciara's been hovering all night, making her little comments, positioning herself close to me whenever she gets the chance.
I don't see it the way Everly does, but I see that it bothers her.
And that bothers me.
I walk over and my hand goes to Everly's hip automatically. She leans into me.
"You good?" I ask.
"Yeah, fine."
"Liar."
Chloe grins. "I'll leave you two alone."
She walks away and Everly turns to face me.
"What's going on?" I ask.
