“Well?”

Eden tsked. “He’sBrother-in-law.You should’ve been able to find that one.”

My eyes snapped up to him. Was I supposed to find this adorable or weird? Reece and I weren’t married yet. We didn’t even talk about it anymore. “Very… creative.”

“Thank you. I was very proud of that one.”

“Sure.” I scrolled toB,and when I finally found Reece’s contact, I was so close to hitting the call button when Eden’s phone turned off.

“What?” My brother snatched his phone away from me, hitting the screen over and over again. “NO!” He kept tapping the screen. “How am I supposed to save all these cute girls’ numbers now?!”

More importantly, how was I supposed to call my fiancé now?

“Fuck this,” I muttered under my breath as I got up from the bench and made my way over to Erik.

BROOKLYN

“Could I use your phone for two minutes?” I asked, not bothering to greet him. Erik wasn’t a fan of greetings anyway.

Since I didn’t greet him, I didn’t say hello to Millie either. I wouldn’t have even if I said hello to Erik.

As a matter of fact, I wasn’t even paying attention to her in the first place.

Suddenly I wondered if Erik knew Millie gave birth to me. Perhaps that was why he was so determined to hurt me when we were still skating partners. I was going to ask him about it another time.

“What for?” Erik asked, smiling up at me cockily. He knew I would’ve never asked him foranythingunless it was super necessary.

“I have to call someone.”

“Call who?”

“None of your business,” I replied.

“I think it is, Brooklyn,” Millie said. “It’s his phone.”

I took a deep breath, trying my very best not to punch her right in the face. “I need to call Reece.”

“Use your own phone,” Millie replied. “Isn’t your oh-so-great father paying for your phone bill, or why do you need to use my son’s phone to call that boyfriend of yours?”

Wow, she really was as horrible as I pictured her to be.

Before I could reply, Erik spoke, which was fortunate for me because I wasn’t sure what was going to come out of my mouth next.

“I told you he was going to ditch you eventually.” It shouldn’t have surprised me that he was, once again, assuming he knew everything. “But sure, call him.”

I held out my hand, waiting for Erik to hand me his phone.

“Your whole family constellation isn’t good for you, Brooklyn. Dating your father’s friend’s brother? Ridiculous. But you refused to listen when I tried to talk to you,” Millie said, shrugging at me.

My lips parted slightly as I tried to speak, but I realized that no matter what I had said, it would have just fueled her stupidity.

Who was she to tell me anything about my direct family or who I considered part of my family? She didn’t even know anyone but my parents, at least not that I knew. And even if she had known my parents’ friends once upon a time, they hadn’t been in touch for at least twenty years.

“Erik told me all about how awful that guy is to you. What was his name again? Reece? He grew up around your father, so he really can’t be that much of a good guy.”

“Oh, shut up, you whore.” I decided to simply take Erik’s phone from him as he made no attempts to hand it to me on his own accord. I couldn’t have cared any less about what either of these two was going to say or think about me at that moment. “If my father really was such a bad guy, how come he didn’t fake his death to get out of raising me?”
