“Tell me,” I say.

My wingmate begins to sign.

The ships are all Sileshian. They claim to have been engaged in a training exercise when one of Queen Lirtha’s messenger birds found them.

I roll my neck. “And their entire fleet was required for her rescue?”

Apparently.

I turn the rotating hourglass on its stand, toying with the sand trapped inside. “Did our scouts see any evidence of the serendipitous storm the fair queen claims blew her off course?”

Ty’s fingers snap closed.

No.

I lean back. Silesh isn’t foolish enough to attack. Its navy is powerful, but I could torch the fleet in the span of a moment. They know this; Queen Lirtha knows this. There can be no victory for them that way.

Then Queen Lirtha must feel she has a more suitable weapon. I reach out to flip the hourglass once more, my eyes tracking the time. The corner of my mouth creeps up.

“She knows,” I say.

Ty nods.She knows.

“Make sure my queen doesn’t.”

Yes, my king.
