“This will be a tough one,” he said. “As you know, it’s hard to find information on the dark web, but I’ll work on it. Nick at the Veritas Center also agreed to help.”
“I’ll get a hold of Mina,” Nolan said. “And take the original documents you recovered to her to see if she’ll share information on the shooting scene.”
“She won’t be happy we didn’t report it.” Hayden dropped the marker in the tray. “Or that we used the key to get the documents.”
Nolan grimaced. “I’m sure you’re right, but what’s done is done. I’ll just have to face the consequences.”
“She probably isn’t happy that we fled the shooting scene either.”
“Not likely but I’ll run interference for you.” Nolan gave a tight smile. “I’m sure she’ll be fine once she has the key and the original documents. Just be aware, she’s not likely to trust us as easily in the future, and that could mean not sharing any findings from today’s shooting.”
Ruining their trust with Mina was something Hayden would never want to do. Next time he saw her, he would explain and try to win her back to their side. They couldn’t afford to be without law enforcement backup. Not when it looked like some nefarious organization might be behind Kai’s disappearance.
