Dima deflected. He was good at taking a conversation in the direction he wanted it to go. I didn’t even have the energy to challenge him, so I went with the topic change.

“You looked really good out there tonight. Like you were born to ride and wear the Durty Boyz colors.”

I sat up taller in my seat and finally focused my eyes on him. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth until his wholeface lit up. It was hard to stay mad at him when he was a natural at being that damn fine.

“Bishop made me and Daze members the other day. We not prospects no more. We both won our races tonight too.”

“Look at you. I knew you had a different look tonight.”

He smiled again, letting all thirty-two of his beautiful white teeth come into view. His jawbone flexed a little before he spoke again, and I wanted to lick it. It was insane how I could go from questioning Dima one minute to wanting to eat him up the next.

“And you look as good as you always do.”

I smiled at that. My eyes landed in my lap after doing everything they could to avoid Dima’s. I was never shy, but around Dima, my body just responded differently.

He pulled up to the compound and put his truck in park. I started gathering my things because the quicker I got out of this man’s presence, the better.

“Hey,” Dima called to get my attention.

He lifted my chin with his finger so I would finally give him my eyes. He looked at me with so much care. The kind of care I knew would last forever from the first moment I got it.

“Thank you for having my back with Tyrus. I was mad in the moment, because I don’t ever want to think about something happening to you. I fuck with you, Maeve, and that means I will do anything to make sure you’re good. You standing in front of me when another man is holding a gun to my head is the opposite of that. I hope you can understand that.”

“I understand. I just saw him pointing a gun at you and panicked, but I won’t do it again.”

“Thank you.”

Dima leaned across his console and kissed my lips. I swear he never cared about people seeing him with me. First, he was kissing me outside of my father’s house. Now, we were at acompound with hundreds of my father’s men inside. Actions like this were what made me want Dima more.

I should not have been focused on Maeve. I should have been focused on the job ahead of me, but she seemed to be the only thing that occupied my mind these days.

I woke up first thing this morning with images of her in the back of my head. I sat up straight in bed and tried to shake the thoughts. That was the only thing I could think to do to get my dick to go down.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand and scrolled her Instagram. Maeve was fine as fuck. I was sure she had men coming at her left and right, and I didn’t want to be one of them. I wanted to be the one she responded to.

I navigated from social media to search for a florist in our area. After settling on one, I searched the website for a bouquetof one hundred red roses. I ordered them to be delivered to her home this morning. Bishop had court this morning, so I knew he wouldn’t be there.

I didn’t have any specific intentions that made me send her flowers. I just wanted her to at least know that I was thinking about her. My phone rang as soon as I cleared my cart for Maeve. It was my uncle Atlas.

“What up, Unc?”

I spoke excitedly like I hadn’t just woken up. It was almost midday, and my ass was still in bed. I was always excited to talk to my uncle. He was one of the only people in the world that I didn’t mind getting on the phone with. Still, I knew he would get in my ass if he knew I was still asleep this time of day.

“Hey, Nephew.”

“Everything good, Unc?”

The tone of his voice answered my question before I even asked. I could always tell when something bothered him. It was the same way for him with me.

“Yeah, I was just worried about you. Wanted to give you a call today. How is everything going with the case?”

“It’s been smooth so far. I tipped Fitz off about the border meet last night. He said that would make a good break in the case since it was a cover for a drug deal. He was able to raid it and recover all the narcotics.”

“You said he was there himself? That’s fascinating.”

My uncle said a lot without saying much at all. I could tell he didn’t trust Fitz. He especially didn’t trust him after he helped me go behind his back to get assigned to this case. My uncle Atlas probably thought Fitz had ulterior motives. It wouldn’t matter to me if he did or not. I would bring this shit to an end if it was the last thing I ever accomplished in this lifetime.

“Fascinating how, Unc?”
