He taps the tip of my nose. “You’ll be a better mother.”

I drop my head onto his arm. It doesn’t quite reach the top of his shoulder, which is fine by me. I’ve always loved how opposite our bodies are—his so big, mine so…not.

“Thank you.”

He kisses my head. “You’re welcome.”

We’re about to turn into the dining room when a commotion comes from the front hall. Feylin stiffens. “Stay here.”

He charges to find out what’s going on, but there’s no way I’m going to let him go alone. I’ve got magic. I can defend myself if I have to.

I’m at his heels in an instant, to which he grinds out, “I thought I said?—”

“I know what you said. I didn’t obey.”

He curses but only replies, “Stay behind me.”

As soon as we round a corner, we come face-to-face with?—

“Nana.”

Blood drains from my face.

My grandmother doesn’t seem to notice my response as she casually brushes dust off her shoulders like if it’s no big deal that she’s dead. And here. In the castle.

She looks exactly the same as she did in life—curly silver hair piled high on her head, full makeup, and dressed to the nines.

She straightens the tall collar of her black brocade gown. “What a trip. Didn’t think I’d ever get here. You have no idea how hard it is to travel when you’re dead.”

“Nana.”

I literally just keep repeating the word because I can’t think of anything to say. Feylin’s hand is on my shoulder, squeezing it, pulling me back from the proverbial cliff I stand on.

She appraises my husband proudly. “So this is the man you married. You did marry him, didn’t you?” she eyes Feylin with satisfaction. “Yes, you married him. I can tell.”

I clear my throat in the hope to knock some sense into my brain. Nana is here. Nana is dead. Nana is here.

“Feylin, meet my grandmother, Rebecca?—”

“Nana will do,” she interrupts. “I’d love to hug you, but being dead and all, I can’t make any promises that it’ll work.”

Feylin doesn’t miss a beat. He bows deeply out of respect. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“The pleasure’s mine. Any man who can bring out Addie’s magic has a special place in my heart.” Nana glances up and around the castle. “You’ve married a king, Addie. I give my blessing.”

“Th-thank you.”

“Now.” She crosses her arms and narrows her eyes, getting down to business. “There’s still more work to do. The rest of your sisters have to marry, and I’m looking at Blair.” She tips her head in thought. “What’s the name of that man she thinks she hates?”

“You mean Devlin Ross? You want to set them up?” When she nods, I laugh. “Good luck. She despises him.”

“Not when I’m done with her she won’t.” My grandmother strokes her chin, and with a twinkle in her eyes adds, “Welcome to matchmaking by the dead. Now. Let’s get started.”
