He pulled her into his arms and kissed her right there in front of everyone, which made great cheers resound from all that had gathered—warriors and villagers and servants alike.
Yet he drew away just as suddenly and glanced at the table where Conall had moved down a seat so Sorcha could sit next to Daran, the girl smiling adoringly at him.
“Och, Aislinn, do you think the two of them one day…?”
“Who can say?” she teased him. “He made her a chicken coop, after all. What girl wouldn’t be charmed by such a gift?”
Cameron shook his head, teasing in his voice, too, though he heaved a sigh. “I dinna want tae think of when she’ll be old enough tae marry and we’ve suitors banging at the gates—”
“We won’t think of it, not tonight,” Aislinn broke in gently, thrilling at the warmth of Cameron’s fingers as he took her hand to lead her to their seats. “We’ll think instead of all the blessings bestowed upon us—Cameron? Why is Conall looking so glum?”
A short laugh escaped Cameron. “Another messenger arrived an hour past from King Robert, who wants Conall tae return tae Dumbarton straightaway. It appears he has a bride in mind for him, though the letter said little else—”
“A bride?” Stunned, Aislinn glanced from Cameron, who grinned as if quite pleased with the news, to Conall, who appeared from his dark scowl that he was anything but delighted.
“Aye, what else but a wife tae cure him ofhisaffliction?” Cameron whispered against her ear, nuzzling her. “Aislinn Eleanor Campbell… the most precious blessing God could have ever bestowed upon me. My heart… my life.”
She hardly heard the roars of approval as Cameron once again swept her into his arms, her cherished husband… his kiss so filled with love… the greatest blessing she had ever known.
