He pushed back and studied her face. “What is wrong, darling?”

“Nothing’s wrong.”

He shifted to the bed beside her and propped up on one elbow so that he was looking down at her. “Yes, I can see it in your expression.”

She smiled and caressed his cheek. He’d recently celebrated his thirty-fifth birthday, and when she’d asked him what he wanted most in the coming year, he’d said he wanted nothing more than a year filled with making memories with her.

Even if he hadn’t said so, she knew he wanted a child—children—before he was too much older. Not just so that he could produce an heir but because he genuinely wanted to share the blessing of having a child together.

She slid his hand from her hips to her stomach. “I’d like to introduce you to someone.”

Max’s brow shot up, and confusion filled his eyes.

She settled his hand more securely on her belly. “Max, say hello to your baby.”

He froze and held her gaze.

She nodded.

His eyes turned glassy. “Really?”

“Yes. Really.”

He blinked hard, cleared his throat, then shifted so that his face was above her middle. A second later, he bent and kissed her stomach with so much reverence that tears stung her eyes too.

As he lifted his head, he finally smiled at her. “I love you, darling.”

She plunged her fingers into his hair and began to drag him back up so that her lips could twine with his again and she could show him just how much she loved him in return.
