Elsy glanced at Connell. His surprise mirrored her own. “And what does Robert the Bruce say?” Connell asked while edging his horse forward.

Laird MacArthur clenched his jaw, but a tear slipped from one eye as he gazed at Connell. “That my son is not dead.”

“Nae,” Connell breathed. “I am not.”

Elsy watched as Laird MacArthur dismounted. Connell copied his father, jumping down from the horse. They stood before each other. Connell looked confused, nervous. Elsy wanted to nudge him forward and tell him it would be alright. Laird MacArthur rushed toward his son, wrapping his arms around him. He cried into Connell’s shoulder, his hand stroking his son’s hair.

“Yer alive,” he sobbed. “I cannot believe tis the truth.” Laird MacArthur pulled away from Connell, his hands cupping his son’s face. “Ye have come back to me.” He smiled. “Why did ye take so long to return to me, my son?”

Connell shook his head. “I didn’t think ye would want me.” He touched his eyepatch. “I am no longer whole.”

Laird MacArthur shook his head and he pulled Connell into another tight hug. “Of course, I want ye. Yer my son.”

Connell smiled, his gaze going to Elsy, and she wiped the tears away from her eyes. “Father,” Connell started as he stepped toward Elsy. “This is my wife.”

Laird MacArthur nodded. “Aye, I remember Elsy.”

“And this is my adopted daughter, Scotty.”

Laird MacArthur beamed at Scott as she smiled shyly at her adoptive grandfather. Warmth seeped into Elsy as she followed the men toward the fortress, eager to see her old home once again and to show Scott the gardens she and her father once used to tend together.
