We end the call, and I return to the gym. My headphones are still in as I get on the treadmill next to Axel. He’s already at a fast pace, so I don’t say anything as I set my speed and program.
I flick my screen over to where Evan’s studying. She glances over her shoulder toward the camera almost like she can feel me watching. Something that’s been twisted all day unravels inside me.
She’s safe, waiting for Cam to come over to sleep with her. She’s not alone.
While I warm up, I watch her and listen. There’s not much sound. The rustle of movement, the click of the keyboard. It’s soothing. The door to the bedroom opens, and Cam walks in. Evan swivels in her chair and grins.
I cut the connection, just in case things go the direction I’d take them in. I don’t mind someone catching a glimpse of my girl studying, but no one but us gets to see her fucked. I click through the files and skip the ones in the bathroom for now.
I scroll back to when she walked into my room and follow her walking over to my desk and deciding whether to work there or go back to her own room. She glances guiltily at the camera I told her about, but then makes herself at home in my chair.
Pushing my books gently to the corner and using my space like it’s her own. I smile as sweat drips down into my eyes. My heart rate is up and my legs strain at the pace, but it all feels good. Normal.
Axel is still walking when I slow my pace to cool down. Jackson’s on the other side of the gym, but he’s been watching me. Fuck him.
“Is your girl all settled?” Axel asks, nodding to the phone. He can probably tell I’m watching her, but he doesn’t say anything. “The media thing?”
Jackson doesn’t appear to be listening to us, but I’m betting he is. We stop our treadmills at the same time.
“Yeah, the school took it to the police because of the threats and pictures are being taken inside the school.” I grab my towel. Dad texted earlier about it. I’m glad he thought to loop me in.
“I’m glad the police are involved.” Axel grabs my shoulder. “You need anything, let me know.”
I nod and wipe my face with my towel. Jackson walks over to the free weights, and I move to an arm machine near him. He works as hard as I do at this, which I would expect given where we are and what we’re going for.
How can I find out if he’s still interested in Evan? Besides using her for bait, which I’m not going to do. I doubt he has anything like a lock of her hair in his gym bag. But there might be proof on his phone.
“You know the girls go nuts for the brooding look.” Wilder asks as he takes the machine next to mine. “But this almost looks like you’re contemplating something. What’s up?”
“Espionage.” I set the weights to what I usually work out on.
Wilder chuckles. “What kind?”
“Wondering if a nerd I know can get into someone’s phone.”
Wilder leans back on the machine and looks me over. “There’s this guy at my old high school who knows fuck all about everyone. There’s not a machine you can keep him out of. I know, I tried.”
“Is he trustworthy?” I hadn’t thought to look outside our school, but maybe that’s the answer.
“I mean, he usually is for a price, but Jack usually barters with information rather than money. I don’t know if you’d have anything that would interest him.” Wilder shrugs. “I can give you his information. He’s the best I’ve ever seen.”
I nod and glance at Jackson. It couldn’t hurt to get an outsider. Maybe he can check my system for leaks too. “Text it to me.”
CHAPTER 28
EvanAnn
When my alarm goes off,I draw the covers over my head.
“You want to stay in bed all day, goody?”
“Yes.” It’s not even a question. All the pictures and “love notes” are still up and may never come down.
Cam chuckles. “If I want to get into Yale, I have to go to school.”
I flop the covers down. “You’re right.”
He leans over me and kisses me softly. “I can see why Damon likes sleeping with you. You clung to me and only me all night. It was the best.”
