Brian grins. “What, worried I can’t be professional because I have pictures of your ass?”

I slap him on the back of the head. “What Detective Fortescue meant was he’s sorry for how well he played his part in all of this, right?”

“Sure. Whatever you say.” Brian crosses his arms, mirroring Greer’s stance as she narrows her eyes.

“You told me I was crazy. That my stalker didn’t exist. That I was making it all up!”

Chase snorts, rolling into the room behind Greer with a shit-eating grin on his face.

He loves drama, so I know he’s eating up the one I’ve created here.

“Well, I knew your stalker existed, and I was working for him. What was I supposed to do? Bite the hand that feeds me to save some pretty girl?”

She bares her teeth like she’s about to square off with him, before I put an arm across Brian’s chest and push him backward.

“None of this is helping. Brian is an undercover government ops in the department to ensure I stay off their radar. I might’ve also had him put on your detail to give me a safe way into your house the night he was sitting on it with Shaw.”

“You mean the night you held me at gunpoint?” she tosses back.

Chase whistles. “You didn’t tell me that part of the story.”

I toss him a look to tell him to shut up because he’s really not helping my case.

I don’t know why, and I’ve never felt this way before, but I really want to de-escalate Greer’s mood before she goes off. I have a feeling being on the end of her ire isn’t something I ever want to experience.

Chase lifts his hands. “I was just saying. I’ll shut up.”

Greer steps closer, her eyes locked on me and completely ignoring Brian, who is no longer the target of her anger.

“You let me stand in the road, in the cold, with my ass cheeks out for them to photograph.”

I smirk. “I told you to call them off. That’s your fault. You got yourself in that position.”

“Excuse me?”

“Uh oh,” Chase sing-songs, “Mommy and Daddy are fighting.”

Brian snickers, but moves out of slapping range and rounds behind Greer, with an evident amusement on his face as he steps beside Chase and shakes his hand.

The two haven’t seen one another in quite some time, and I was worried about Brian coming here, but I need him in on this.

“You heard me,” I continue, ignoring the two idiots behind her making kissing faces and egging me on.

It’s hard not to feel like it’s another time, and I’m another version of myself with them reunited, but with Greer present, I’m faced with the reality of my situation and the threat looming.

“I know I heard you, but I can’t believe you’d blame me. I was your victim.”

“Hardly.”

This has her fuming, her arms un-crossing, and anger filling her eyes to a level I’ve yet to see.

Before I realize she has it on her, she pulls her gun and trains it on me.

My first instinct is to laugh, but Greer doesn’t break her stance.

Chase clears his throat. “Maybe we need to take a step back here.”

“You stalked me, made me fear for my life for two years, did unspeakable things to me in my sleep, held me at gunpoint, and had your friend here make me believe I was crazy and keep the police off your fucking trail!”
