A few minutes later, we all sat at the counter, eating our food.

Once we were done, Major and I got the kids together for his parents to pick them up.

Hours later, Major and I sat on the couch, watching movies.

“Marcel went by the house to check on Sparrow, and he was good.”

We still had Sparrow, and the kids loved him. He didn’t necessarily care for them, though. Most of the time, he would rub on their leg for a second, then go about his business. Most cats were like that, though.

“That’s good. We should have brought him with us.”

“No, we shouldn’t. I’m sure he was glad to have a break from your children.”

I giggled and punched Major in his arm. “Oh, they’re my kids when they act up.”

Major kissed the side of my head and chuckled. Our kids weren’t bad, but we allowed them to be kids, so of course, they did things sometimes that drove us crazy. Talia liked to grab Sparrow’s tail at times, and he would let her at least once. If she tried it twice, he would run away.

“Did I tell you I saw your brother?”

I turned to face Major. “No. When?”

I hadn’t seen my brother in years. We happened to run into him one day at the grocery store. He knew I was married, and at the time, we only had MJ. He spoke to MJ, and I thought maybe he would try to be in his nephew’s life, but I was wrong.

“A few days ago. He was the job I had to do.”

Major was still doing the HVAC thing. At one point, he thought about opening his own business, but he decided he wanted to keep regular hours since he wanted to be home at decent times to help me with the kids.

My business had expanded over the years, and I was able to hire staff to take care of the day-to-day operations. I only went in to work a few times a month, and when I did, I took one or both kids. I even created a body butter after Major called Its Major. It was our top-selling men’s body butter. We also developed body butters for children. I named two of them after the kids, and the latest one that wasn’t out yet would be named after the third baby. I wanted to create generational wealth for my kids and their children’s children, and that was what I was doing. Each child would have a share in the company.

I still liked to take pictures, but most of the time, it was of the kids or Major. With each pregnancy, we took pictures of my stomach weekly so we could document the progress.

“Oh. Did y’all talk?”

“We did. He did ask about y’all, but that was it.”

It saddened me that my brother and I could never work out our differences. When we were kids, we were super close. He didn’t know how much he was missing out on not being in my children’s lives.

“Oh well.” I shrugged. I didn’t want to let on that it bothered me, but Major knew me well enough to know it did.

Major lifted my chin, forcing me to look up at him.

“Listen to me. I know it hurts you, but it’s his loss. You haven’t done anything wrong. You have family with us. Don’t let him get you down. You got that, Mrs. Nelson?”

“Yes, Mr. Nelson.”

“Good.” He kissed my lips. “Now that we are kid-free, what are we going to do?” He wiggled his eyebrows.

“I could think of a few things,” I said as I climbed onto his lap.

Major’s arms wrapped around my waist. He pressed his forehead against mine.

“I can’t thank the rental office enough for my cabin beingdouble-booked.If it wasn’t, I would have never met you.”

“The best day of your life.” I giggled.

“Indeed, it was.” He kissed me, then stood from the couch. He carried me into the bedroom, and we celebrated Valentine’s Day the only way we knew how, and that was wrapped up in each other.
