“Oh, wow,” I said. For some reason, this did not feel good.

“With great power comes great responsibility,” Andy said. “They were thinking about starting a web series. With you as the lead investigator, of course. We’d have to look into one of our other fan favorites as a co-host. Anybody you’d like to work with?”

I blinked.

“God, I don’t know,” I said. “This is a lot.”

“I’ve always wanted to be on camera,” Gabe said.

“Let me think about how to pitch that,” Andy said.

“No need to think,” I said. “Brilliant, savvy, woman-about-town with her sassy gay BFF investigating the unknown.”

“I resent that,” Gabe said. “We are not BFFs. My BFF would be way cooler than you.”

“No, but it’s fun,” I said. “For the camera.”

“You’re gonna Queer Eye me and make me palatable to heteronormative America,” Gabe said. “You know what. Hard pass. Thanks but no.”

“Well, there’s always time to discuss it with the DDM guys,” Andy said. “Keep up the good work, ladies.”

I smiled at him as he left, and then immediately grew panicked.

“I can’t juggle a job and two boyfriends and a limited career as a Youtube host,” I said. “I barely have enough time to watch my shows as it is.”

“Girl,” Gabe said.

I had a flash, then, of my dream from the night before—two flickering beacons, with their bizarre flames, and the words ‘Can’t you feel the power flowing?’

“Hey guys,” I typed out on my phone. “Party at my place tonight. I might be getting a promotion.”

Two heart emojis from two separate guys. I wondered what my father would think, and then decided against listening to the little voice that sounded like him thundering in my ears.

Instead, I was just satisfied.
