But sometimes, you have to lie to yourself to get through the day. Sometimes it’s the only way to keep going.

I stare out the window at the dark highway and passing shadows of tall pine trees.

He won’t remember me anyway. He’s back in Montana and probably moving on with some new girl.

“Just keep convincing yourself it was wrong till you believe it,” I say. “It will be easier that way.”

“Talking to yourself about one of your news articles again, huh?” Nick teases me.

I startle. I hadn’t realized I just spoke out loud.

“Yeah,” I force a smile. “Sorry. I can’t wait to be at a school again where I can write stories for real.”

I turn back to the window, fighting back the tears.

Colton Wild is in my rearview mirror.

And for his sake, I hope I’m in his, too.
