I head for the stairs, then pause with my hand on the railing. "Geoff? I got my midterm grades back today."
"And?" He's watching me with that intense focus that makes me feel seen.
"All A's."
His face transforms completely, pride and possessiveness and love all mixed together in an expression that makes my chest tight. "That's my girl. My smart, perfect girl." He grabs my hand and pulls me back toward him. "Changed my mind. Reward first, then punishment. Upstairs. Now."
I laugh, running up the stairs with him right behind me, both of us breathless and happy.
Some things never change. I'll always struggle with boundaries, and he'll always struggle with pain. But we have each other now, and that makes all the difference.
