So was the popup space near the front that featured some of the best craft cocktails on offer at Tomes and Tumblers. A special permit from the city put that idea over the top. Now we were blended and poised to make a killing on one of the most important Saturdays of the year.

The bell above the door chimed, signaling the arrival of our first customers. Gwen greeted them with a warm enthusiasm that I was so glad she mustered. I watched as she guided them to the new releases section, her enthusiasm infectious. I was so glad she rallied herself to be a part of this.

“Here we go,” I said under my breath. “A new chapter begins today.”

Minutes after opening, The Green Frog was bustling. Families wandered in, children’s laughter filling the air as they explored the whimsical décor of the children’s corner. Local artists had set up tables, showcasing handmade goods that perfectly complemented the store’s offerings. It felt like a community fair, with everyone coming together to support one another.

Robert arrived just as the crowd reached its peak. He had a knack for making an entrance, his presence commanding yet comforting. He spotted me across the room and made his way over, a warm smile on his face.

"Looks like everything's running smoothly," he said, his eyes scanning the room.

"It is," I replied, feeling a sense of pride. "Thanks to you."

He shook his head. "You did this, Anya. I just helped you see what was already there."

“TikTok helped us too.”

He laughed. “Viral fame has done us well.”

We worked side by side, greeting customers, sharing stories about the books we loved, and genuinely connecting with the people who had become more than just patrons—they were friends. The energy in the store was electric, a testament to the hard work and dedication that had gone into this day.

The highlight of the day came when Robert and I held a small ceremony to thank our customers and community for their unwavering support and their response to the viral video that made us famous. We had decided to donate a portion of our sales at both bookstores to New Burlington Library, a gesture that was met with enthusiastic applause.

As the day wound down and the last of the customers trickled out, I found myself standing at the counter, the register closed, and the store quiet once more. Robert joined me with a cup of coffee in his hand.

"You know," I began, "I never thought I'd see the day when I'd actually look forward to Small Business Saturday."

He chuckled. "It's amazing what a little perspective can do."

I nodded, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. "It's more than that. It's about realizing we're not alone in this. The Green Frog is part of something bigger—a community that cares, that supports each other."

Robert reached for my hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "And you've built a huge part of that, Anya. You've created something truly special here. You’ve kept the legacy going."

“You’ve done a lot too. New Burlington is becoming quite the place to be.” When he nodded, I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me that had nothing to do with the coffee. "We did it together."

As we locked up the store and stepped out into the chilly evening air, I felt a sense of gratitude that was almost overwhelming. The journey had been tumultuous, filled with unexpected twists and turns, but it had led me to this moment—a moment of clarity, of connection, and of hope.

Small Business Saturday had transformed from a day I dreaded to a celebration of resilience, community, and the enduring power of dreams. That night, as Robert and I walked hand in hand down the quiet streets of New Burlington, I knew the future, whatever it held, was something we would face together.

The stars twinkled above us, a silent reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always light to be found. In the heart of our small town, our unexpected love stood as a beacon of that light, a testament to the strength of community and the magic of second chances.

Talk about a storybook ending.
