Inside the building I acquired with my mother’s inheritance, I provide a full range of comprehensive care services including onsite medical services, housing, counseling, and—if necessary—rooms for police to interview victims in a safe setting. I’ve been cautioned some of them will leave SMAA stronger, some may never recover from their traumas. But providing them a chance is the last vestige of hope I have in my heart for being redeemed. Still, early on, I fluctuated between minimal and ultimate despair when the director would inform me of another person whose case didn’t fair well—whether that was emotionally or within the courts.
This building is my final salvation.
