“Damn, you have an apartment in town.Cool.Free digs.”

“Not free to me, I still pay the mortgage.”

“Even better, I can freeload.”

“It’s the first place I ever bought.”In her attempt to put down roots.“I did work on that place.”

“Marriage is working for me already. You got ID?”

“Yeah, for?”

“Might as well stop at wherever we have to sign up for the paperwork.”

“I think there’s a waiting period.”

“There isn’t in California but if we’re not planning to be back there any time soon, check the rules here. We’re doing it this week. Before I come to my senses or anyone finds out.”

“Okay,” she said, opening her fingers to take his between them.He glanced her way and winked.Reluctantly, she let go to start reading up on her phone.“You’ve never been married before, right?”

“No.Once and only once. You’re lucky I’m doing this much for you.”

“Oh, my hero.”

“That’s right, Radley.Your alpha.”

“If it makes you happy to think that, honey, good for you.”

“We’re going to be good at this.Marriage.I can tell already.”

“A blessing or a curse.Only time will tell.”

“It’s easy.I’m the husband, I make the money. You’re the wife, you make the babies.”

“We’re not having babies.”

“Right,” he said.“I’m the husband, I…” He frowned.“Wait, this doesn’t seem like a fair division of labor.”

“How about I’m the wife, I keep my bikini line trimmed for you.”

He side-nodded once.“It’s a start.”

She went back to looking up things on her phone.“The place is closed until tomorrow.”

“Wake someone up, Babycakes, we have cash.”

“You can’t buy your way around the law,” she said, putting her phone back in her purse.“They probably weren’t open today anyway. And there’s a three-day waiting period. We’ll get up and go tomorrow.”

“Get up?Like we have work?”

“You can be in the office if you want to be, you ever hear of video calls?”

“You ever hear of morning sex?”

The day had begun on a different coast. With the adrenaline wearing off, tiredness was starting to catch up to her.“We’ll have to get up to visit Mom anyway.”

“Mom, right.Up early, get the license tomorrow, married on Friday?”

Now they had a plan. For the rest of the week anyway.
