“What’s your favorite sweet treat?”

“Bowser!”

One of the guys called out for him and he sighed.

“I’ll be back in a bit,” he said.

I nodded, though hid my disappointment. “Sounds good. I’ll be here.”

Then, he left my room again. Leaving me alone, with my books, while he talked about God-knows-what with who-knows-who.

Hopefully, this shit is almost done.

But I had the sneaking suspicion it was only the beginning. Even after five solid weeks of being here.3Bowser“Did you whip her up some of your lasagna?” Sly asked with a grin.

“Nope. Sushi,” I said.

Link furrowed his brow. “I didn’t know you made sushi.”

I shrugged. “New thing. She said she liked it and I’m trying to make her as comfortable as possible. She’s getting restless, which will be an issue if it continues.”

Sly chuckled. “Uh huh.”

I glared at him. “Do you ever keep your cock in your pants?”

“It’s in my pants now. Doesn’t mean I have to stop thinking about it.”

Link rolled his eyes. “Anyway, we came by because we brought some things to restock the kitchen. Heard you were getting low on some things.”

I snickered. “You mean, those tomato and bologna sandwiches Ash always eats? Yeah, we run low on that shit all the time because he uses a whole tomato and half a damn thing of bologna for his sandwiches in the first place.”

Link grinned. “We brought some more things.”

I nodded. “Appreciate it.”

Sly crossed his arms over his chest. “You had any issues with the girl since you got here?”

I shot him a look. “Her name is Hope. And no.”

He grinned. “Why so sensitive?”

Link interjected. “Because you’re intentionally being a dick in order to try and uncover something that isn’t there. Bowser knows the rules. Everyone knows Hope is off limits one hundred percent. Quit trying to live some sort of fantasy through someone else.”

Sly shrugged. “I mean, she is hot.”

I growled. “You take that back.”

Link shot me a look and I straightened my back. Sly chuckled, and I wanted to smack that grin right off his fucking face. I marched off the porch and started unloading groceries, trying to give myself something to do. Because the mere fact that I couldn't have dinner with Hope pissed me off. But to have Sly—of all people—making comments like that?

I was ready to put that asshole in the ground.

“So, I’ve been thinking,” Sly said.

“Choose your next words carefully,” I said as I handed him the gallon of milk.

He opened the fridge. “This girl’s been through a shitshow lately. And being cooped up here can’t be any better on her mind or whatever.”

I paused. “An actual, legitimate thought. I’m impressed.”

Link’s warning tone appeared behind me. “Bowser, give him a break. We’re all high-strung right now.”

I licked my lips. “Yes. She’s been through hell and back. And someone needs to pay for the emotional scars Skeleton left behind.”

Link patted my back. “My thoughts exactly. Which is the other reason why we’re here.”

I blinked. “Say what?”

Sly unpacked the meat slices. “We wanted to come by and start brainstorming some ways to take care of Skeleton for good.”

I balked. “You mean to tell me we’ve been doing this shit for five weeks and no one’s thought that shit up yet?”

Link shrugged. “Been a hell of a past few weeks. Even you know that. We’re working on nothing, which is why we needed to let the heat die down off this shit before we made another move.”

“But you guys haven’t even brainstormed? That sounds insane to me. What the hell have we been doing for Hope this entire time?”

Sly blinked. “You mean, other than watching over her every second of every day to make sure no one comes after her?”

Link jumped in. “And feeding her without a cost to her whatsoever?”

“And providing her with entertainment to pass the time.”

“And generally, not harassing her for information on Skeleton since she was the closest to him for a while?”

I held up my hands. “All right, all right. I get it. Damn.”

Link sighed. “This is a trying time for all of us. But I think we’re finally at a place where we can start making some moves.”

I nodded. “Which is code for ‘none of our contacts have information, so we have to do something.’”

Sly chuckled. “Yep. Pretty much.”

Link glared at him. “Anyway. We can talk about it tonight or we can get the guys together for church tomorrow afternoon. But if we come with ideas? It’ll help church be more productive.”

I licked my lips. “Anyone talked to Knuckles about this?”

Sly shook his head. “We haven’t talked to Ash yet, either. Though, he’s probably dead asleep right now. So, we couldn't even if we wanted to.”

I put up the last of the groceries. “How about this? Tomorrow, when Ash comes to relieve me, I’ll go find Knuckles. Him and I can start brainstorming, since you know he’ll be at the hub of this plan anyway, and then we can fill everyone else in. I think it’s risky to involve the entire crew. But the core of us should know what’s up.”
