Link didn’t look at me. “Here’s what we’re going to do: the girls are going to get dressed in their Sunday best—”
Knuckles snickered. “What church are you going to?”
Link shot him a look. “—and then they’re going to strap weapons wherever they can. I’ve got the rented truck and the rented trailer out back. We’ll load the girls up into the trailer along with other heavy ammo guns, then a couple of the prospects that have come with us on this trip are going to drive the truck. Bowser?”
“Yep?”
“You and Sly are following behind us in a car in case shit goes south. The rest of us are going to take different routes to our final destination, which is a campground about an hour north of here. My sources tell me Skeleton and some of his asshole buddies are around this way scouting for more women, so this is the perfect chance to strike.”
I nodded. “Do we have a Plan B? In case this goes south?”
“Yeah. If we’re discovered? We slaughter them.”
I raised my eyebrows. “While we’re in a campground?”
Sly sighed. “Will you just let the man have his moment?”
I turned to face him. “Sorry if I don’t want to get innocent civilians caught up in our nightmare.”
Knuckles placed his hand on my shoulder. “What he means is that, either way, we take Skeleton out today. We’ll fall back on our old formations and do what has to be done.”
I stared at Link. “Then just say that.”
He harrumphed at me. “All right, ladies. Let’s get changed. We head out in half an hour.”
Link clapped his hands, then made his way out of the back room. I didn’t know what the fuck his problem was, but he needed to get the hell over it. The tension alone would do us in before we could ever get shit off the ground today. And declaring this mission a failure wasn’t an option for me. I promised Hope she’d have her life back. I promised she’d be free. And I meant to fulfill that promise, even if Link didn’t like what happened in the process.
So, he could get over it.
“Come on. Let’s go get set up in our car,” Sly said.
I clicked my tongue. “Lead the way.”
Sly led me out a side door while the girls started changing. The car we were in was small, but it looked easy to maneuver. Its light brown color faded into the background of this place, which was nice. And when Sly popped the trunk, I grinned down at the sheer number of guns, bulletproof gear, and ammunition readily available for us.
“Go ahead and pick your poison. The rest is for if we actually have to get out of the car.”
I immediately reached for a bulletproof vest. I strapped it to myself before wrapping guards around my thighs, then I reached for a gun holster. I holstered two fully loaded guns right beneath my arms. And after strapping a semi-automatic around my shoulders, I slid knives into my pockets and strapped a pistol to each of my hips.
Before loading every single pocket, I had with more ammunition.
“You good, Rambo?” Sly asked.
I grinned. “Not taking any chances today. And neither should you.”
He smiled mischievously. “Trust me, I’m not.”
While we got ready, Link and the rest of the gang got the girls loaded into the trailer. Which honestly, looked more like an attached R.V. than an actual trailer. It didn’t matter, though. Whatever helped us to blend in would work just fine. They were dressed in everything from booty shorts and tank tops to innocent dresses and ruby red lips. There was something for everyone, metaphorically speaking, in the back of that trailer. And I knew damn good and well Skeleton would take the bait. I mean, they all looked like damn college girls, for crying out loud. Party girls, study girls, sorority girls, goody-two-shoe girls.
Skeleton would pick one of them up, for sure.
And when he did, we’d all be ready.
I slid in front of the steering wheel and Sly dropped in beside me. He looked at my neck and barked with laughter again before I slowly looked over at him with a glare. He held his hands up in mock surrender before I nodded at him. Then, I turned my gaze back to the trailer in front of me.
Watching Link lock it.
“He’s pissed that you went against his orders,” Sly said.
I shrugged. “Not like he wasn’t banging someone he was trying to protect, too.”
“That’s why he’s angry, too.”
I looked over at him. “What?”
He sighed. “He’s angry because he knows how distracted you are right now. He doesn’t want you getting anyone killed.”
“And how the hell do you know all this?”
“Whose ear do you think he’s been chewing on since we got here?”
I rolled my eyes. “I swear, he’s more of a girl than anything else. He’s scared about me setting Hope aside, but he can’t set this shit aside. He’s like a spoiled teenager.”
