The memory ate me alive every single fucking day of my life, though.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Hope whispered.
I sniffled. “I could have saved them. Had I left that church meeting instead of—”
She cupped my cheeks and raised my watery eyes to hers.
“It’s not. Your. Fault. Do you hear me?”
I swallowed hard. “Doesn’t feel like it.”
She sighed. “That’s why you don’t sleep, isn’t it?”
“They call it ‘trauma-induced insomnia.’ It’s a fancy way of saying ‘I’d rather stay the fuck up instead of have nightmares every night.’”
“Oh, Bowser.”
I gazed into her serene brown eyes and felt myself getting lost in them. They were swirled with soft strokes of dark green that reminded me of the forest expanse around this cabin at nighttime. I felt her breath against my lips. Teasing me. Taunting me. And when I felt her nose brush against my own, I couldn't hold back any longer.
“I promise you I’ve held back as much as possible,” I whispered.
Then, I captured her lips.
My hands splayed against the small of her back when she froze. I didn't want to pressure her, but I sure as hell didn’t want it to end. I held my ground. I soaked up her warmth. I waited for her to make the next move, whether she leaned into me or pulled away.
And the second her pelvis tilted toward me; my tongue invaded her mouth.
“Oh, fuck,” she moaned.
My arms cloaked her back as my tongue slid across the roof of her mouth. Everything inside me burst to life, raising my cock to attention. For weeks, I’d wanted to know what this woman tasted like. For weeks, I’d wanted to feel her against my body. For weeks, I’d wanted nothing but to run my fingertips against her bare skin and kiss every crevice of her body.
And now, I had that chance.
“Shit,” I growled.
I sucked on her lower lip as her hips rolled against me. She ground against me, seeking a friction my tongue desperately wanted to give her. I gripped her pert ass cheeks and stood to my feet. Her curves molded to me, comforting me with their warmth as I sat her on the edge of the kitchen counter. I moved liquors off to the side. A glass crashed to the tiled floor as her legs spread for me. She giggled as her head fell off to the side, her hand sliding into my hair. Gripping my tendrils just like I gripped her hips.
“More,” she breathed.
I growled as my fingertips slid beneath her shirt.
“I need more,” she moaned.
My lips slid down her neck as my teeth raked against her pulse point.
“I need all of it,” she whispered.
And just as I reached for the belt buckle that held up my jeans, I heard a rumbling in the distance. The rumbling of a motorcycle engine as it tore through the woods to get to the cabin.
“Are you expecting someone?” Hope asked.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. “Get in your room. Now.”
The moment burst and the tension faded away. And in its place rose a different kind of tension. One that sank my cock back into place and forced Hope to leap down from the counter. She rushed out of the kitchen and down the hallway, making her way back to the room. I drew my weapon from my hip, aiming it directly at the front door as I backed up toward the light switches.
Turning them all off to leave this place in the dark.
“Bowser!”
I paused at the sound of the voice. “Link!?”
“Bowser, damn it. It’s me. Get out here. We need to talk.”
I lowered my weapon. “Dude, are you fucking kidding me?”
The front door opened. “I texted you three goddamn times telling you I was heading out here. Where the fuck is your phone?”
Sorry, I was a bit distracted, asshole. “What do you need?”
“First? For you to lower that gun.”
“Hey, Hope!?”
I heard a door creak open. “Yeah?”
“It’s just Link. I’m going to step outside to talk with him. You’re safe, okay?”
“Promise?”
My heart ached for her. “I promise.”
As I holstered my weapon, only one thing crossed my mind as I followed Link out onto the porch. I had to take out Skeleton. There was no way in this world Hope would ever feel safe again if that man was still walking the earth. I also knew that as long as he was walking around, Hope and I didn’t stand a chance, either.
And now that I knew she wanted me, too, the stakes were higher than ever before.6Hope“I just want to go for an hour or so. Nothing more than that,” I said.
Link shook his head. “I can’t let you leave this clubhouse. It’s for your safety.”
“I want to go see my sister at her office. Hell, you can even accompany me. I’m sure she’d love to see you anyway.”
