I’d never been good with being patient.

My mind wandered while the news ran in the background. I wondered how my sister was doing and how her law firm was going. I wondered about Skeleton and whether or not he figured out what we were up to yet. For all the shitty traits that man had, he wasn’t an idiot. And part of me was worried he’d find me before we could enact any sort of a plan.

Trust Bowser. He’s got this. He’s got you.

Yeah, well. Easier said than done.

I rolled over onto my side and stared at the wall. I closed my eyes, trying to make myself fall asleep. But it was no use. I was wide awake, and there was no changing that. I threw the covers off me and slid out of bed, meandering over to my satchel. I dug through things until I found my most comfortable outfit: a pair of lounge pants with pockets and a tank top. I threw some clothes on and went to snatch up the remote before I started flipping through channels.

And after finding reruns of “Psych,” I settled in for a day of mindless television and as much delivery as I could get for forty dollars.

You know, once my hunger finally kicked in.15BowserThe second I stepped into the bar, I was focused on the mission. I couldn't dwell on Hope and how I wanted to stay in bed with her. I couldn't think about how great she felt wrapped around my body with her lips pressed against my own. I had to push all of that from my mind. I had to make sure my mind stayed on one thing, and one thing only:

Catching Skeleton once and for all.

I crossed through the empty bar with my boots falling mutely against the waxed hardwood floors. Peanut shells and hay straw were still stacked in some corners, but other than that the room shone with pride. The girls really put their all into this place, that much was for certain. And on any other day, I might’ve invested in their property a bit. Taken a slice of their money as my own. Hell, maybe helped them open up another bar to suit their monetary needs while cutting a nice chunk off for myself in the process.

We weren’t here for that, though.

I charged through the door into the backroom and closed it behind me. The smell of coffee wafted beneath my nose as someone stuck a hot mug against my palm. I looked down at the black liquid and brought it to my lips, chugging as the caffeine slowly lifted the foggy haze of sex from my mind.

Then, something tickled my nose.

“Eat,” Slash said.

I looked down at the paper plate she held and wrinkled my nose.

“The fuck’s that?” I asked.

She snickered. “It’s fruit, Bowser.”

I looked at her. “Where’s the bacon and eggs?”

Knuckles chuckled. “According to her, that’s for winners.”

Slash nodded. “You want a spread that’ll stop your heart? Let’s get this bastard first.”

I grinned. “Fine by me. I’ll be expecting steak and eggs at that point, though.”

She shoved the edge of the plate against my chest. “I’ll be sure to let the cook know at whatever restaurant we celebrate at.”

I barked with laughter before I took the plate and brought it up to my mouth. I plucked all the food off it with my tongue and my lips, intermittently taking sips of my coffee. This shit wasn’t nearly enough to fill me up, but I didn’t need to be full. Because if I was full, I’d want to take a nap.

No, what I needed was to be alert.

So, a bit of an empty stomach would do that for me.

I set my mug down and looked over at Link. And I watched him shake his head. The guys snickered and some of the girls giggled as I looked over at Sly. He smiled that damn cheesy-ass grin of his before he walked over, his eyes attached to my neck. Then, he pointed at his own.

“Have a bit of fun last night?”

My eyes widened. “Fucking hell.”

The girls fell apart in laughter while Link simply glared at me. I slapped my hand against my neck, feeling the raised welt that I knew was probably red as well. I rolled my eyes, knowing damn good and well I’d catch hell about this for later. But I couldn't think about that right now.

“All right. We gonna run through this plan? Or are we gonna let another day go by with Skeleton thinking he’s safe?” I asked.

Slash stopped laughing. “Not a fucking chance in hell. That man deserves death, far as I’m concerned.”

Link stepped up to the crowd. “Everyone okay on the plan?”

Sly held up his finger. “We should run it again, just to make sure we’ve got it.”

I nodded. “I second that plan.”
