Finally, she looked up at me, breathing in deeply.

“It’s just that…my interaction with the President of the previous MC…erm, Crash, Mary-Beth’s brother…well, it was never good. He scared me. I’m sorry.”

“Drax is not like him. You don’t have to be afraid of him,” I replied.

She nodded. “Okay, I think I’m ready to go now.”

I led the way down the hallway to the office door and knocked before entering.

Drax was writing in his diary again and then he looked up. I saw the look of surprise on his face too. He also wasn’t expecting a stripper from Teasers to look like Mercy.

Drax squared his shoulders and put his hands together on his desk. I had a feeling he was trying to mask his pain again.

“So what do you have to tell us, Mercy?” he began.

She looked at me again and I nodded.

I didn’t realize until now that I had suddenly become her source of encouragement and support.Everything was a blur the previous night. Once we attacked Teasers, the only thing I was focused on was completing the mission. I remembered pulling Mercy down to the floor before she got shot and I remembered looking into her eyes, but that was it. And now she was standing right there beside me in Drax’s office, being interrogated by him. She looked like someone trying her best to hide the fear bubbling under the surface.

The only thing I wanted to do was pull her into my arms and make sure she knew I wouldn’t let anything happen to her.

“Tell me everything you know about Crash,” Drax asked.

“I don’t know a lot. I’ve been at Teasers for less than six months. I was never a part of the inner circle so I wasn’t in on the gossip,” she replied. She was trying to keep her head up, her chin thrust out. She didn’t want Drax to see how afraid she was, but I could see it.

“But you told Mary-Beth you knew about Crash’s addiction.”

“Yeah, that was pretty obvious. Plain for everyone to see.”

“And what did Eagle have to do with it?” Drax continued.

“He was the one supplying the drugs to Crash. He would take him into the office in the back and they’d party in there together. Get the girls to go in with them. It seemed like Eagle was trying to keep Crash away from the workings of the Club.”

Drax threw me a look. We were both thinking the same thing—Eagle was planning a takeover. This was exactly the reason why he made a run for it the moment the club was attacked by us last night. He hadn’t demonstrated any shred of loyalty toward his club or his President.

“And what do you know of Eagle?” Drax continued.

Mercy licked her lips and shrugged.

“Only what I saw of him around the place. He was the Vice President, but didn’t seem to act like one. He was more interested in partying than working, that’s what it looked like to me anyway. I…I always tried to keep my nose out of it. I am not…I wasn’t a part of the MC and I wanted it to stay that way.”

Drax let out a chuckle. “Why? What the fuck do you have against MCs?”

Mercy gulped. She got nervous again, just when she seemed to be warming up to Drax.

“N…nothing personal. I’m just…I don’t belong to this world.”

Drax looked up at me. He was about to smile but his face seemed to screw up in pain.

“For fuck’s sake! You need to go back upstairs and rest,” I growled.

Drax clenched his jaws and shook his head. “I’m fuckin’ fine.”

“Do you want me to call Mary-Beth over so she can decide if you’re fine or not?”

He threw me a look. Maybe he was thinking of fighting me on this but realized he would lose the battle once Mary-Beth got involved.

“I’ll keep her here, question her some more. You take a breather for a while,” I suggested.

Did I want to be alone with Mercy?

Hell, yeah.

But I wasn’t about to admit it to Drax. I was barely even admitting it to myself.

However, Drax was giving me a look like he knew something I didn’t.

“Fine. I’ll go. You keep her here. Get as much out of her as you can and I’ll deal with Crash later.”

Drax stood up from his chair and even as he did, it looked like he was in some pain. I was going to suggest getting Mary-Beth to help but I knew he’d be mad at me if I suggested such a thing.

He threw Mercy a look on his way out the door. When the door shut behind him, I turned to her again. This time, she looked me straight in the eye with some renewed courage.

“Do you remember me from last night?” she asked.

Her question threw me for a moment. I was trying not to think about our first encounter.
