I got dressed and ready to leave the room.
“Are you going to stay in bed while I’m gone?” I asked Drax who was still under the sheets. He gave me one of his crooked, handsome smiles and held out his arm. I went to him so he could pull me in and kiss me again.
“Thank you for doing this, Drax. Thank you for letting me see him and offering to help.”
“You don’t have to thank me, beautiful. I’m only doing what I know is right. I never intended on keeping you both apart. I just wanted to figure out what I wanted for Crash’s future with us.”
I nodded and he kissed my forehead.
“I’m going to try and make him see reason,” I said.
“Whether he agrees to it or not, we are going to put an end to the war. The Silver Knights will be nothing without him and we aren’t going to be very forgiving of all the shit they’ve pulled over the past few months. It would be in Crash’s best interest if he agrees to our terms and declares an end to the war now.”
I agreed with everything Drax was saying but knowing Crash and his ego, I wasn’t so sure he would jump at these ideas. Drugs or no drugs.
“I’ll talk to him. Let’s hope he gets it,” I said.
“I’ve let the guys know that you’re going to the holding cell. They’ll let you in and keep an eye on you.”
I walked to the door and waved at him. Then I stepped outside and pulled the door close behind me. The Clubhouse still seemed empty and quiet. It was late in the morning, but it was obvious that everyone was resting after the night we’d had.
I was excited and nervous to see my brother. I had no idea what state he would be in and if he even wanted to see me. Chances were that he wouldn’t.
Before I went to see Crash, I grabbed a coffee from the kitchen. A part of me wanted to delay the meeting, wanted to gather my thoughts. I hoped I would even bump into Sophie, maybe. But she wasn’t anywhere to be seen. There was barely anyone around.
So I just sipped my coffee in silence in the kitchen, trying to decide what I would say to Crash. How I would appeal to him. I knew he was going to fight me on everything. He wasn’t going to be gracious about the fact that Drax had let him live.
When the coffee was finished, I put it away and started in the direction of the holding cell in the basement. I could hear my heart thudding in my chest.
I didn’t even know what he was going to look like today. Drax hadn’t gone into the details, but I was sure Crash had taken a beating.* * *It was Flash and a few of the prospects who were guarding the holding cell. Flash nodded at me encouragingly when I got there.
“Thanks,” I said when he unlocked the door for me.
“We’ll be right out here. Call for me if you need me,” he said, and I smiled at him.
The door was shut but not locked behind me. I entered and realized I had never been in here before.
There was very little light, but there was some. Somehow, it wasn’t as cold as I expected it to be.
The cell was pretty much completely empty other than a single bed in the corner. A tray with food and a cup of coffee was on the floor beside the bed but I could see it was untouched.
Crash was in bed, lying on his side facing the wall. He had sheets pulled up over his head so I couldn’t actually see him. But I knew it was him.
“Danny? Are you awake?” I whispered. I could hear my own footsteps here. I could hear my own heart thudding.
He shifted and then looked over his shoulder. I got a shock when I saw him. When I saw how red his eyes looked. How crazed. His face was covered in sweat, yet, when he pushed the covers off him, it looked like he was shuddering. Like he was cold.
“Danny! It’s me…”
There was a look in his eyes like he didn’t recognize me. He blinked blankly at me and I got closer to him. There was a part of me that was actually afraid of him. My own brother!
“It’s Mary-Beth,” I reiterated.
Slowly, he seemed to move, slowly sitting up in the bed. He was staring at me like he was still trying to place me.
“You should eat something, Danny. There’s food here for you.” I tried not to get too sentimental, even though it was difficult for me to see my brother in this state. There was a big bluish bruise across his face that I could see more clearly now. One of his eyes was swollen. There was some congealed blood around his nose. It looked like he had been hit across the face with something hard.
