“And I want you to tell me why you care. None of this is about you.”
“But you made it seem like it was. You made me believe that Drax had a hidden agenda against you, because of me.”
Crash grunted and sat back in his chair, leaning far back.
“And so what if I did? It’s the truth,” he said.
“Is it? Is it really the truth? I don’t believe it is,” I replied, narrowing my eyes at him.
Crash was trying to assess the situation. Our eyes were locked on each other. Neither of us was going to back down from here. Eagle was the one who spoke up.
“You went to see him, didn’t you?”
We both turned to him. There was a sudden look of betrayal on Crash’s face. I gulped.
“You fuckin’ did, didn’t you? You went to speak to Drax!” My brother was raging mad. He stood up from his chair and pointed a finger accusingly at me.
“It doesn’t matter who I spoke to, Danny. I just want to hear the truth from you.”
“You have no idea how stupid you are. You went into enemy territory. You spoke to the President of our rival MC. Do you know what will happen if the others find out?”
“What others? Your men? Aren’t you supposed to be the boss of them?”
“And you are my sister. You’re not supposed to canoodle with the enemy! Bitch.”
I was shocked to hear the tone of my brother’s voice. The words he was spewing. This was a new side to Crash I’d never witnessed before.
“How dare you talk to me like that?” I hissed.
“You are in my Club. I talk to you the way I want,” he snarled.
I would never have felt unnerved by my brother before, but now I was. I felt like I couldn’t be sure what his reaction would be. What he was capable of doing to me.
“You are also my brother, and I expect you to be honest with me. Why are you doing this, Danny?” I heard the sound of pleading in my voice. I could see how his eyes were bloodshot red with anger now. But it wasn’t the same kind of anger I had seen in Drax’s eyes earlier. I knew Drax wouldn’t hurt me. But with Crash…I wasn’t so sure anymore.
When he walked around the desk and moved toward me, I flinched and took a step back.
“What did he tell you? Drax?” My brother’s voice was low and guttural.
I glanced at Eagle. He seemed to have a massive grin on his face.
“Nothing specific. But it is clear to me now that you are as responsible for this as he is. Maybe more.”
“Responsible for what?”
“The violence. The tensions. The shootouts. Do you realize people in or neighborhoods are afraid? They know what’s going on between the two MCs and they’re scared, Danny.”
He came toward me again but this time I managed to stop in my tracks and face him.
“You’ve gotta stop acting like a fool. I want you to make peace with Drax and the Iron Thunders. I’m sure you guys can work something out.”
“You gonna let her talk to you like this?” Eagle spoke up again. I glared at him, surprised that he would say something like that. Crash didn’t look at him. He was focused on me.
“Are you telling me what to do?” he snarled.
“I’m telling you what the rest of us are thinking—that a war between your MCs is going to cost our communities. I want you to see that. Please, Danny.”
My brother grabbed me by my arms and shook me violently.
“What the fuck did he tell you?”
“It doesn’t matter what Drax said!” I screamed while he continued to shake me.
“Are you two banging again? Were you in his bed?”
“Danny! Please! Do you not remember who I am to you?” My voice cracked as I pleaded with him again. What was happening to him? My brother, the guy I had grown up with—the guy I thought I knew. Why was he acting this way?
I looked over his shoulder at Eagle who was standing up staring at us. That grin was still on his face. It looked like he was enjoying this.
I turned to Crash again. I could see the pure hatred in his eyes. I knew I had to give him something.
“Drax and I are not back together. We are over. You know that,” I said in a low voice. I wanted to connect with him somehow. But Crash’s strong gaze was unwavering.
“So then why did you go see him?”
“Because I thought he would give me the answers I was looking for, since you refuse to give me any straight ones. Besides, I figured if he does have some vendetta against me, then I can help sort that out too.”
“You need to mind your fuckin’ business, Mary-Beth!” he growled.
“Are you going to tell me why you’re doing this?”
