“I can’t wait to knock you up again once he is,” Brax stated with a sly grin on his face.
“Absolutely not!” I slapped at the hand that covered my belly. “Take that back before you wish it into existence.”
Brax laughed. “Nah, I don’t think I will."
“Fine, then I hope the next one is another sweet little girl who will want to start dating when she’s two.”
“My J-baby does not want to date.”
“I’m pretty sure she has designs on Geo’s little play friend, Danny.”
“Nope. If I have to kick a toddler’s ass to make a point, I will,” Brax huffed.
“You can’t kick a baby’s ass, Brax.”
“So long as he keeps his hands away from my baby girl, we’ll be just fine.”
I cracked up laughing at that. “At least we don’t have to worry about Rich trying to crash our vacation this time.”
Brax smirked. “Serves him right what happened.”
“Karma works in mysterious ways," I tacked on.
“Come on, Avi, there was nothing mysterious about that. He was shacking up with a married woman, and when her husband came home to find him there, he beat him until he was paralyzed from the waist down.”
“Still, it felt a little like overkill when his mistress left him because he didn’t properly function anymore.” I couldn’t hold back my giggle. “I still can’t believe he had the nerve to ask Mel to take him in after that.”
“At least she didn’t give in,” Brax added. “Thank fuck for Trent.”
“Yeah, if he wasn’t in the picture, I think she might have done it. Not for her, but the kids.”
“The kids are better off.”
Trent and Mel were engaged to be married in the spring. I couldn’t wait because I’d be able to fit in the bride’s maids dress that she picked out for me. Granted, it would only be a few months after I gave birth to my little guy, so there would still be the issue of possible leaky boobs, but I found some amazing pads to help with that.
Rich lived in a nursing home, since Mel wouldn't take him in. He still worked for our company, but was given accommodations to do so from home, since he wasn’t very good at caring for himself. The kids he had with Mel went by to see him sometimes, but those visits were fewer and further between each time because Rich was a bitter man who didn’t bother to hide it from his children. One day, they would refuse to go, and he wouldn’t have anyone to blame but himself.
“Daddy, can we eats cake yet?” I turned to see my darling daughter had woken up. “Pweease!”
“We still have a few minutes in the car, Janine.”
“Awww,” she moaned as her little hands lifted to rub her tired eyes.
“If you finish your nap, we’ll be there by the time you wake up again.”
“Then we gets cake?”
I rolled my eyes as Braxton answered her. “Then we’ll sneak a little taste of the cake your mom got for your party, okay?”
“Otay.”
As soon as her breathing evened out again, I smiled over at Braxton. “I love you more than is possible,” I told him.
“Well, that’s crazy because I love you just the same.
